In two days I have an interview. From the looks of it, I'm still going to have this cold, which has obviously made me look sicker than a dog. Should, or shouldn't I give a handshake to the interviewer?

If you are visibly ill (coffee, chapped nose), then, no don't shake his hand but say, "I would shake your hand, but I don't want to get you sick."

If you are just feeling a little crummy, but are not obviously sick, it would be better to use some purell before you go into the interview and shake his hand. You probably won't be very contagious by this point anyway.

I would be polite and say that I have a cold and do not want to chance spreading germs! The interviewer will appreciate the gesture!

yes, but couldn't you use some hand sanitizer prior to going into the interview? This might keep the germs down a bit. OR better yet, you can arrive a bit early and go to the bathroom, wash your hands well and put on some lotion (for dryness) and this should help with keeping the germs down also.

Well, consider the converse ....if you shake his hand, and then are visibly sick during the interview and he gets sick (or thinks that it was gross that you shook his hand) this will not cast you in a favorable light...

Thanks for looking out for public health ;)

No handshake and make explanation that you have a cold. They'll appreciate it.

I would just say "Excuse me if I don't shake hands-I've been ill and don't want to share!" I know I would appreciate the thoughtfulness.

No.
Politely say that you have a cold. He will appreciate that he doesn't have to shake your hand and perhaps get sick as well.

Take some anti-bacterial gel with you (you can buy the small kind). I commend you for at least being concerned. Some people are so GERMY.
