This is something you should research completely and check all branches of the military to see which one best suits your interest. The Army and the Marine Corps would be a bit more physical (requiring you to be able to maintain a rigorous level of physical fitness), the Air Force may be somewhat more like a regular job (you will still be required to be fit in any branch of the military). Talk to people who are in or have been in all services to see what their take is. I am a female who was in the Army and it is not for wimps. It is a committment and a way of life totally different than what you are used to. Being in the military requires discipline, the ability to take orders, and to think and react quickly. It can be your best dream or your worst nightmare. Think it through carefully.

If you want to do it. You are going to be an adult. They can't stop you. They are just afraid for you, which is natural, but you can die anywhere. The odds of dying in Iraq are very slim.

Keep in mind the Marine Corps is different fr4om the other branches of service. It is not a place where you go just to get college money. If you don't WANT it, you will HATE it. You the soul of a killer looking back at you in the mirror. This doesn't mean you will be able to kick everyone's *** that you meet, but rather there willl be a certain quality about your character of confidence that grows with you.

By the time I was 22 I had been to Japan, Thailand, Kuwait and Iraq. I discovered whole new passions in life. I had fired .50 cals, automatic grenade launchers, a host of automatic weapons, and thrown grenades. I had seen the mezmerizing devastation of naval gunfire, close air support, and field artillery. I had ridden in tracked vehicles, flown in helicopters, and debarked from landing vehicles during amphibious operations.

My friends were doing good things back home, but never got out and did new things. Some were carpenters, some masons, others were in college partying and paving a bright future. My personal recommendation is that you do those things later and go get some adventure while your still have the fire in your belly.

Besides all of the intangibles. You will get the GI Bill for college (I think around $1300 per month now). You get a modest salary (google military pay charts) your food and shelter will always be provided. Totally free medical and dental. 30 days of leave per year.

In five years, I had emerged as a sergeant with a paid off truck and $15000 in the bank and ready to go to college for free. I did just that and I am about to graduate with an advanced degree, no debt, and a substantial portfolio. I owe a lot of it to the things I learned as a U.S. Marine.

If you choose to do it, your experience will be completely different as is everyone's, but you and I will have much in common. It is something your parents will never understand, but no matter where you go or what you do until the day you die, every Marine is your brother.

First off the Marines is not the Army so that will help you with your parents if they don't like the Army. Tell them straight forward you are joining the Marines for 4 years to get some maturity for when you go to college. The more settled you are and more mature you are the better you will take advantage of college. The discipline you gain from serving will help in school also. Good luck.

If your 18 years old your parents can't stop you from joining the military. You can get a great start in the military and even make a career out of it and retire after 20 years. Which if you do that you could retire at age 38. Your guaranteed a job in the military especially if you go full time. If you go Reserves you only get that couple hundred dollar weekend drill check.

The military will also help you pay for college.

If you are 18 you can do what you want. So is it Army or Marines? Both are a good choice. Look at your options and see who gets you the best deal. You can go to www.goarmy.com and they have a parents section or I'm sure your recruiter will be more than willing to talk to your parents. Good luck.

You know you'd be going straight to Iraq, right? I hope thats why your joining cause that's what your going to get. I'm not just saying this, this is the truth. My husband was on his third tour and just hit an IED explosive in a hummer and now I'm sitting at Walter Reed hospital with a whole bunch of young soldiers around me from the Marines and Army with missing legs, arms and scared up faces. Make sure this is the right decision for you.

No worries, if they hate the Army, they'll love the Marine Corps. ;-D

Just sit them down (after a good meal) and talk to them about your plans, what you have learned, what you want to do, and such. The conversation will usually take on a question and answer tone so make sure you have done your homework. Other than that, good luck.

Well if they dont want anything to do with the army your fine-you want the marine corp.
My uncle was a marine and it is by far the worst branch you can enter-Air Force is the best. Tell your parents the military takes care of your housing, medical, and educational bills along with various insurances. This should calm them a little if they are put of completley by the military. Marine life can be gruely depending on what you want to do-consider other branches if your parents dont budge.
