I got TWO calls from my husband while he was in Basic. A 10 second call on the 3rd day he was gone, giving my his address, and a 5 minute call a week before he graduated. They are very busy. They have a lot to learn in a small amount of time. You will be the least of ther worries.
My son was 9 months old when my husband left for Basic. He turned 22 months old when my husband returned from Basic and Tech school.

My fiance went through basic about a year ago for the AF. He will call you in the first two days to give you his mailing address, but don`t be surprised if its rushed and hes a little annoyed sounding because his TI will probably be yelling at him. After that they`re supposed to be able to call a few times but I only got one other call the whole time. It depends on who is in charge of them and the performance of their flight as a whole. Don`t feel bad if he doesnt call much, its not his choice whether he does or not and remember that part of the training they go through in bmt is to help them mentally cope with being away and not having that much contact with family. My airman wasn`t even supposed to write for me for the first half of his basic but he did anyways. I recommend lots and lots of letters and pictures but what you send probably will be seen by a TI as he can make your airman open it in front of him if he thinks there may be something hes not allowed to have in it. Hope that helps!
Oh and if you have the chance to go see him graduate, defintely go. It`s really something to see.

You may be able to talk once a week or every couple weeks. Depends on which branch and what he's doing. He can write every day.
BTW, write him EVERY DAY. There is nothing as good as mail call while in Basic.

You usually get a call within the first 72 hours. Then usually on Sundays but with the military nothing is a guarantee.

phone calls must be earned, and they can and will be taken away for EVERYONE if one person screws up.
start getting used to it now. deployments will be even longer with no reliable communication.
i got exactly 2 phone calls the entire 9 weeks of Navy Boot camp.. both in the last week.
