You mean, originally? It provided a common thread for everyone in the Empire. The Holy Roman Empire took in people with a large variety of languages and dialects. Giving them a common liturgy helped to give them commonality with each other. It also meant that someone travelling could find a church or cathedral even in a remote area where he could understand the service.

One of the bases on which the Empire was founded was that it was the continuation of the Roman Empire. Having all the masses in Latin helped to contribute to this idea.

The HRE was neither Holy, nor Roman, nor an Empire - yet it existed for hundreds of years as a functioning, unifying entity.

i dont know...it opened up religion to the common people and allowed them to be an integral part in its founding and rise to prominence?
