Christmas didn't start until the Middle Ages. But there were Yule trees back then, and Yule does predate Christmas by a long time. I personally believe that it refers to the Yule/Christmas tree.

However many Christians I know insist that it is really talking about worshipping nature as idols which is why they don't like Paganism/Wicca, because nature is honored, but is constantly incorrectly translated as being worshipped. Pagans/Wiccans do not decorate trees out in the forest or even their front yard with gold and silver like is mentioned in the aforementioned passage. The only time a tree is decorated like such is when it is brought in as a Yule/Christmas tree. Thus it makes no sense as to it being anything else.

It is not a "Christmas tree" but is taken from the pagan worship using this tree. It is pagan in origin and is in no way scriptural. This is what today's Christmas Tree represents in it's origin. I do not believe many people know where it came from and merely use it by tradition.

Jeremiah 10:2 This is what the LORD says: “Do not act like the other nations, who try to read their future in the stars.
Do not be afraid of their predictions, even though other nations are terrified by them. 3 Their ways are futile and foolish. They cut down a tree, and a craftsman carves an idol.
4 They decorate it with gold and silver and then fasten it securely with hammer and nails so it won’t fall over. 5 Their gods are like helpless scarecrows in a cucumber field! They cannot speak, and they need to be carried because they cannot walk. Do not be afraid of such gods, for they can neither harm you nor do you any good.”

No, it refers to people making images to worship. The Christmas tree that we have now is only a decoration for the season. A place to stack gifts that we have made or purchased for the people that we love. We do not worship the tree.

At that time, Christ had not been born so, there was no celebration of Christmas.

copy and paste,, I think this is more for the Pagans which came before the Christians

“ Do not learn the way of the Gentiles;
Do not be dismayed at the signs of heaven,
For the Gentiles are dismayed at them.
3 For the customs of the peoples are futile;
For one cuts a tree from the forest,
The work of the hands of the workman, with the ax.
4 They decorate it with silver and gold;
They fasten it with nails and hammers
So that it will not topple.
5 They are upright, like a palm tree,
And they cannot speak;
They must be carried,
Because they cannot go by themselves.
Do not be afraid of them,
For they cannot do evil,
Nor can they do any good.”

Jeremiah 10:2-5 = "Thus saith the LORD, Learn not the way of the heathen, and be not dismayed at the signs of heaven; for the heathen are dismayed at them. For the customs of the people are vain: for one cutteth a tree out of the forest, the work of the hands of the workman, with the axe. They deck it with silver and with gold; they fasten it with nails and with hammers, that it move not. They are upright as the palm tree, but speak not: they must needs be borne, because they cannot go. Be not afraid of them; for they cannot do evil, neither also is it in them to do good."

This verse does talk about the Christmas Tree as this one in Isaiah 40:20 = "He that is so impoverished that he hath no obation chooseth a tree that will not rot: he seeketh unto him a cunning workman to prepare a graven image, that shall not be moved."

Exodus 20:3-5 = "Thou shalt have no other gods before me. Thou shalt not make any graven image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth: Thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them: For I the Lord thy god am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me;"

Its talking about carving idols to other gods.I'm pretty sure this passage refers to not being tempted to carve an idol, but to worship God directly

I'm pretty sure that the term pagan does not mean .."any religion that is not christian." There were many different religions during old testiment days..not all of them were pagan.

No.

This passage is talking about idolatry.

Baal and Asherah are the primary pagan gods in the OT. They were fertility gods and people were required to have sex to appease them. Women would go to the temple and wait for a man to come and make a donation to the temple on her behalf and then she would have sex with the man. Men would go to the temple and have sex with women or temple priestesses.

People would also build their own idols and if they did a good enough job the God would inhabit the idol and bless them with fertile fields.

i doubt Christmas is the only custom which involves the adorning of a tree or what. these were very ancient times and this was referring to israel taking fear in what other peoples practice.

No. Christians do not worship a Christmas tree.

The upright idols were dumb and motionless; they required attendants to care for them and carry them from place to place.

This teaches that there is no reason to fear or/and worship things that are completely powerless, unable to do good or evil.

YES -- take Santa out of Christmas. Make it a religious holiday instead of a cartoon character day. Celebrate it in your homes and churches instead of Wal-Mart and Target.
