It's not so much who wrote it, but what his stated aims in doing so are.

People should take an open mind on books and novels with this kind of theme. I know a lot of people got pissed over the Da Vinci Code, when in reality, the book is merely entertaining but lacked factual basis. The whole outcry made the novel more popular and even raised more doubt than the book made.
Some things are merely entertainment, and the golden compass is just that.

No, I wouldn't care. An agnostic is an atheist that refuses to come out of the closet. I'm still trying to figure out why Aladdin sits sidesaddle on the Golden Calf with the utopian hermit monks.

I'm not a Christian or an atheist, but since the author has been quoted as saying that the books are about "killing god" I think a lot of people might object to that, even if the movies have toned down that aspect of it.

No why should I throw a book away just because the author has different beliefs then I do. I just don't understand how people can do that. If they would only take the time to get to know others and their beliefs they would find that both is just as beautiful and remarkable as their own.

I do not care so much about the author of the story as I do about what that story is telling us or the imagry involved. I did not watch "Bowling for Columbine" not because of Michael Moore's religion but because I disagreed with its basic premise. I do not watch splatter flicks because I see nothing entertaining in seeing people cut up and tortured. I probably will not see the Golden Compass since teh basic premise is that church is evil and God is insane and needs to be killed. Does not sound like the kind of movie I would want to see. Would not matter if D James Kennedy wrote it.

No, however, since the Catholic church is in a silly uproar about this movie asking people to boycott it, I am going to go watch it not only because it looks interesting but also because the Catholic church is asking everyone to boycott it

I hope that all other Atheists do the same.

I don't care that an atheist wrote it. I do care about the atheistic themes I have heard are in it. And yes I am relying on hearsay. Surprisingly in all the reading I do I have never read them.

No. Knowing that Tolkien was a Christian doesn't stop me from loving his works either. Just because something has religious or non-religious overtones that you may not agree with doesn't mean it's not worthwhile to read. Kinda like the Bible and Qur'an....

No, I don't care who made the movie. The bottom line is that it sends a bad message to kids. In a world where there is so much bad being done, why is it such a crime to teach our kids to embrace faith not kill it. I think every group that is upset over this film is right, whether or not our children grow up to follow any religion, it is important that they are raised in faith with strong morals and values. Anyone who thinks they shouldn't be is silly!
