We worked 7 days and had one day off. Usually we used it to sleep or go to the gym. The camp I was at didn't offer much else to do. If not we would stroll down to the PX and see if any new shipments of magazines or games came in.
Also spend all day in line for phone and internet and when it is your turn it goes down I finally gave up on that and wrote letters.
They finally put in a eatery (Iraqi ran) and they always had some crazy programming all the time.
We would joke around all the time so we didn't go crazy. You just can't burn a barrel of human feces and not make jokes...

There's always something to do on their free time - it's just up to them what they decide to do. Some clean their weapons, some spend a lot of time in the gym or just working out, depending on the location of the camp, they can surf the net and keep in touch with family and friends but their down time is their down time. Soldiers joke around all the time and keep themselves entertained. A person can't be serious all the time, they'd burn out. I've been there twice. Books, movies, college courses, sports and friends don't make it as bad as it sounds. Hope this helps.

there are morale welfare and recreation centers that have pool tables, internet and phones and other fun things, we did all we could to try to forget that we were in a crappy place. its tough at first to switch from combat mode to relaxed mode though, but you get used to it
