basquetbol or baloncesto are both "basketball" in spanish. The problem with Basquetbol is that it is an Anglicism. (Try saying Basquetbol)

The correct term would be, "Baloncesto"

since the sport "basketball" was invented in the U.S. (yes, it really was; look it up.), it would make more sense for the Spanish to adopt "basquetbol" as a loan word than to translate the name of the sport into their language; and if one were inclined to disagree with that, know that a native English speaker attempting to learn Spanish is going to reach for the cognate ("basquetbol") rather than the Spanishized version ("baloncesto") of our own sport. It s only proper to give ourselves the upper hand on this one, as inventors of the sport.
