No, There is no need to add table salt to a dog's food. There is already enough sodium for the dog in the food that you buy for him or her.

Dogs tolerate salt well but excessive salt has basically the same effects that it has on humans. Commercially prepared dog food has all of this nutrient that a normal dog needs.

A regular diet high in salt will predispose the dog to many of the same medical conditions as a human eating too much salt: obesity, diabetes, kidney problems, etc.

A single high dose - e.g., they rip open a bag of salt and eat it - can induce "salt intoxication" which is almost always fatal and requires immediate emergency care.
