There is a product available at Target, all pet stores and probably some grocery stories called "Nature's Miracle." It's great and is specifically designed for dog urine. There are variations on this product and some generic cleaners also work but this stuff has been around for a couple of decades and works extremely well. It doesn't stain, bleach or encourage running of colors.

Do not use amonia-based products (like a lot of household cleaners). They may get the urine out but the amonia after smell tells the dog "here's the spot--aim here at the place with the strong smell!"

White vinegar...my favorite house cleaning product. Of course, vinegar doesn't smell that great, but it takes the urine smell and the stain out. It also disinfects, an added bonus!

If just the vinegar doesn't seem to work for you, try throwing some baking soda down first, then vinegar and letting it set for a while. Finally, as a last resort (I know you don't want commercial cleaners...) arm & hammer makes a pet odor spray that is similar to febreeze...just spray it on the smelly spots. I only use it occassionally, but it works well.

Whatever you use, the only ingredient that takes out the smell are proper enzymes. Water dillutes the smell, perfume covers it up, but a dog will still smell the urine and mark over it and so will the human nose when the perfume wears off.

There is a product called Odorzout that works great on pet urine smells, as well as other smells. You can also use baking soda, but the odorzout really works great.

Petzyme (available at Petsmart and Petco as well as online) is the single best thing I've found. It actually works. You can also use a strong ozone generator, but most people don't have one of those lying around....

Vinegar and water.. nothing with ammonia or it makes smell worse. Suck it up with wet vac or carpet shampooer. Then use arm and hammer rug deodorizer. Works great.
