I am making meat loaf, new potatoes, and a dessert?

What other side should I make? I thought about broccoli but I want my meal to stand out.

Steamed or broiled asparagus with hollandaise would be good and pretty. Or a curried rice pilaf with peas and carrots. And a fresh mixed green salad on the side.

When you make your meatloaf, shape it into the loaf and put it in a large Pyrex 9 x13 pan. Leave about two inches around the meat. Fill about 11/2 inches of water around the meat, then put your new potatoes in, some sliced carrots and halved mushrooms. Put some Lawry's season salt on the veggies. The meat will absorb the some water and it will be very moist. The veggies will cook in the water at the same time. Been doing it for years.

With the meat loaf and potato's being very heavy,it might be good to have a light bright side,something colorful like a carrot-raisin salad. I would also go for a light desert-such as poached peaches with a sweet wine poured over them ,or a cocoa-puff ( that is an uncooked meringue with cocoa powder and sugar added to it.

For a different style of meatloaf, try cooking it by basting it with tomato paste (small can). after browning. Add two cans of water and cook covered. Cut some carrots into 4 inch quartered sections and add these. Cook covered until carrots are cooked through.
