An alcoholic is someone who has a disease and disorder for drinking. Why are people alcoholics? They have deeper issues that stem from within and they use alcohol as a way of solving problems but in the long run it does not. Alcoholism is like drug addiction, it is something that someone keeps doing and doing repetitiously although they know its wrong. Alcoholism is part of or can lead to depression and drug addiction. Alcoholism is something that can be cured with patience and a will to want to commit to sobriety for life.

Well I used to think if you drank some alcohol every day, that is what it meant. But actually, for an adult 1-2 glasses of wine is very healthy. Now that I have observed the difference, it comes down to this... can the person control the urge and are they physically or emotionally addicted to it. Does alcohol play a role large enough in their lives that they have to make adjustments for it.. in other words, does their drinking cause problems.

An alcoholic doesn't drink because because it is fun, or to be sociable. An alcoholic drinks because they have too, need to. The drinking interferes with their life, and becomes more important to them than their job, family, even their life. Many times they have to get pretty sick before they can make the necessary changes to get better. It isn't easy, but there is hope. I am an alcoholic, but I have been sober for seven years. I own and run my own business and have a happy family life. It was worth the hard work to get sober.

I'm not an alcoholic because my father was and I know the effect it has on a family. Some people become alcoholics because they are around liquor so much, they drink a lot and it lowers their tolerance. They end up drinking so much, it becomes a health issue.
There are some people that have problems and figure having a drink would relax them and get their mind off of the problems. Those same people may forget that alcohol is an addictive drug.

I beleive an alcoholic is somebody that has to drink because they cant live without it, it is what they look forward to everyday, and they can not go on with life with out it. I believe there is a difference between havin a few drinks with friends and havin a 12 rack every night, one is fun the other is a problem.

Generally it's genetics. If you have alcoholic parents the likelihood of becoming one is 75% more common. Other than that , it's from low self-esteem. Sorry if I offended any alcoholics out there, but I work with them and do have some facts. Sorry to you who gavoe me a thumbs down. This is a serious matter. Not to be taken lightly.
