Some homeless people sleep in shelters for the homeless.

Others sleep outside somewhere either because there are not enough sheltered beds or because they prefer to sleep outside under their own supervision and away from others,

That's why activists for the homeless and some city agencies comb the streets, alley ways, parks and known homeless areas during extremely cold weather. Homeless people could die in those conditions.

Ignore these unhelpful answers. Charities helping the homeless include The Passage at Victoria in London, Crisis and Shelter. Most homeless people don't get to sleep very well or very long but try to find a sheltered spot under a railway arch or near a ventilation grid where warm air blows out. All these charities have websites where you can donate.

Wherever they can poor souls. I don't understand why local councils and charities can't work together to take over abandoned buildings and convert them in to shelters. In Plymouth alone there are big houses being left to fall apart, and they would be perfect for conversion. Another thing that REALLY REALLY gets to me is that these so called charities open shelters for the Christmas season, then as soon as it is over, they throw the poor souls out again no matter what the weather conditions are like! I suppose they then go back to their cosy little homes and pat themselves on the back for being so big hearted! Hypocrites. Before anyone decides to have a go, yes I donate monthly to charities for the homeless.

If everybody on this site who had just a few dollars to spare to a reputable charity would do it, they would sleep in warm beds every night. Remember, that cup of coffee you bought this morning, that 2$ soda you bought with lunch, that 2000$ tv in your parents' living room...... all of those things could have been food for the starving, beds for the homeless, etc. Please join our myspace group if you are interested in changing things. We just created it, and we need to build membership before we can make a real difference. We are working on corporate sponsorship and eventually opening an NPO to eliminate poverty and homelessness in America and eventually the world. Please help us, and tell your friends to join as well. The cost of building 1 of the jet fighters used in the "war on terror" could have fed every homeless person in America for a month. Think about this....... we are letting people die in our country, so that we can kill people in other countries, and send our own people to die.....

Please, if you are at all interested in helping these poor forgotten people, help us in any way you can.....

Wherever they can. Rooftops sometimes work if they are accessible and the weather is good. Other people have already mentioned other common places. A sleeping bag is a must and at one point a co-op let me set up a tent in their backyard and I stayed there.

If lucky a shelter, if not, tents in a river bottom, sleeping bag in the bushes so you can't be seen, under a bridge is very popular, cemeteries, doorways of Churches, abandoned buildings and cars, their own car
