Buddhist believes in reincarnation. Everything you do in your current life will be reflected in your next life (or something like that).
P.S. Your next life might not be even on Earth, it can be on other planets out there.
cvo .... reincarnation is an afterlife...... try to learn some definition first.
-------
Vanessa ..... your explanation is basically Hinduism version of reincarnation.....
Buddhist felt there are 6 basic realms, The Deva, Asura, Human, Animals, Hungry Ghost, Hell, in that order.
If you want the full detail, you can email me.
But then, it is the Buddhist idea to get out of the rebirth cycle permanently.
You might want to take a look at this website : http://www.onmarkproductions.com/html/six-states.shtml
Not a full description, but it will give you a basic idea.

Buddhists believe that we bare reincarnated until we are able to break free from the cycle of rebirth by becoming enlightened. At this point the person enters nirvana. However if the person chooses to return to human life, they become a bodhisatva and work toward the enlightenment of others.

It is called the infinite circle of life. You are born and live and die. Depending on how you lived your life you come back to live again. Reincarnation. or re birth.
That explains why some are born in Africa to a poor family and suffer all their life. Then some are born in affluiant familys in rich countries. They never have to worry about anything. that is their heaven. Good people are Rich people who have basically went to heaven.
Bad people come back as snails or slugs and if they are really bad they come back as women. Women in that society are born to be mistreated because they were very bad in a previous life or they wouldn't be born as a woman..
HOw they explain women born into rich familys I don't know.
Some of it is just funny but other beliefs are just cruel.
Like some children are untouchables. Born into a society were they come out with the people thinking they deserve to be treated badly. It is a very cruel and brutal religion.
The very fact you have to be born more than once is horrible.

The whole idea is to get out of the cycle of birth and death.....one is continually reincarnated based on your past deeds. The ultimate goal is to pass away and not be reincarnated......this is done by purifying the body and mind thru meditation and good deeds. When one attains what is equivelant to 'god-conscienceness' you are freed from the cycle of birth and death......a re-unification with the divine source.

Please people. There are many, many kinds of Buddhism, so I'll answer from the premise of the basic teaching of the Buddha. Karma is inevitable, it determines your reincarnation status. Eventually you will become enlightened, break the cycle of moksha (reincarnation) and reach the state of being called Nirvana in which your "soul", the divine self within each of us will join with the oceanic Self (God, notice the capital S)which is the Divine. Time is cyclical instead of linear as we think of it, so the cycle repeats itself as well as the cycle of life for the universe.

A Tibetan friend once said, "About reincarnation, there is good news and bad news. The good news is that reincarnation is real. The bad news is that it will never happen to you." Kuma

There's no proof either way, imo.
A lot of Buddhists believe that the afterlife exists and that if you live a virtuous life then you increase your chances of not being reborn as a snail.
