I have had the fear of water since the age of 9, when a wave came in and swept me back into the water. Have not been back to the beach since, although I must say, I've gone fishing many times, off of piers, banks, etc.

If you can deal with being on piers, I actually think a cruise may not be that bad for you. If it is a large ship you hardly even know you are on the ocean. Its just like being at a hotel, so I think you can handle it. Go for it!

You will hardly notice that you are in the middle of the ocean. You can even get rooms that don't have windows on some cruises. Like someone else said. Most of the time during the day you are at a port of call. Only very few days are you at see for 24+ hours. Plus all the on the water time is usually done at night when you are asleep. You will be safe on the boat. You do have to participate in an emergency drill where all you do is line up by the life boats. That's it you just stand there. That is the only time you will have to go outside when the boat is moving.

Funny, I had a similar experience, but I was a little younger. I tasted salt water for days and I am still afraid of sharks! I LOVE the ocean, I just won't go in it. I took a cruise last Christmas and I can't wait to do it again. You can do so much on a cruise without actually physically being in the water. It's beautiful and being on the water is mesmerizing. I waded in the water on a few of the beach ports, but I didn't swim...although parasailing looked really fun (maybe on a lake someday). I would suggest an Alaskan cruise. It's not a real beachy experience. You will be on the water, but not in the water. I went to the Caribbean. My next planned destination is Alaska., and my fiance and I are planning to be married on a cruise in the next few years (probably Caribbean/virgin islands). Please go, you will regret it if you don't! Oh, and travel Princess, it is THE BEST. Get a travel agent. They don't cost anything and it makes it so much easier on you.
Good luck and have fun!!

A seven day cruise has only one or at most two full days at sea and the ships are so large that you could spend the whole cruise without seeing the sea.
Being on a cruise ship you will be further away from water than being on a pier or bank.
The ships travel late afternoon and at night, when there are plenty of things to keep you occupied inside the ship.
From what you say, your fear seems to be related to the beach and large waves rather than water.
There are cruise lines that do 1 day and 2 day taster cruises, you may be better to try one of these to see how you like it before investing a hefty lump of cash on a full cruise.

If you want to conquer your fear then you muist face your fear.
You could get an inside cabin and not go alone outside to the deck, inside the sruise ship you can easily forget that you are in a boat because of all the things to do there.
Take some medicine to calm your nerves such as Azar Spirits which is a reddish liquid sold at Pharmacies or have a few whiskeys before and during the trip.

As it was previously mentioned, cruise ships are so big you don't even know you're on the water. There might be a little swaying, but if you stay inside there's basically no way to know whether you're at sea or on land. The railings are fairly high so there's nothing to worry about. If you are nervous though, just don't go near the edges. I too sometimes get nervous (especially at night) when I go to the edge.

Go on the cruise. It will be a wonderful experience for you and you can discover that the fear can be conquered, even at 72. Truly! Cruising is beautiful, peaceful and wonderful. Don't be afraid, go and have a lovely time.

You are 72 and have a husband - and your screen name is Jeremy? You are 72 and you are asking a virtual community of strangers for advice? Excuse me, but this just does not seem realistic.

Let's assume, though, you are on the level. If you do not want to get on a ship, your husband knows of your fear and will not force the issue. He will adjust to your needs and wants as marriage is a compromise.

You would be fine, take royal caribbean voyager, it is a huge floating village, all beautiful and superb food and shows, loads entertainment, lovely bedroms suites. You would perhaps be better without a balcony (and they are alot cheaper too) But, if you are scared out of your wits, id say dont go, do something you will be happy with.

Go - you won't be IN the water - you will be ON the water.
