You can't until they admit they're an alcoholic and want to quit drinking for themselves. May I suggest that you suggest to the person AA or some councelling that you could possibly attend...

It really depends on the seriousness too.. I mean if the alcoholic is an old person, then it's best leaving them too it, as the damage has seriously been done, and if you make them stop cold turkey, it will probably shock the system and kill them.

It's a really slow process which will take some time and patience, and you really need to be supportive throughout.

you can't, unless the alcoholic has a sincere desire to quit drinking. go to alanon meetings, to help understand this statement better, and to get support for yourself. it is very easy to become an enabler, or co-dependent, when dealing with another's alcoholism.

Seriously.....my friend has been locked up for DWI a few times ( luckilly apparently nobody was injured ) ....so he has joined AA; but whenever he " slips " & calls me from his house when he has a toot on....I go over to his house & pour his booze down the sink. He is afraid to go to a bar to drink because of his DWI's & he stops for awhile after he sees how he " pissed " away his money by buying the booze which I pour down his sink. I think it helps him & I wonder if it helps keep the sink trap clear ?

you can't really. my sister was one for years, and now she finally went to rehab about a week ago. alcoholics cannot see how they are hurting themselves and the people around them. no matter how hard you try, its something they will either have to figure it out themselves or some SERIOUS intervention is needed if they become dangerous.

They have to hit rock bottom often times before a change can happen. But it is a good idea to tell this person how their drinking is effecting you.

I didn't stop until probation made me.

only they can truly help themselves however the only thing i can suggest is to be supportive in the process of recovery.don't let it take over your own life.
