My jack russell came to me from a relitive and he never had the attention he should have. He was always kept in a kennel, I want to have him out of his kennel more often then he is, but he is too hyper. When we open the door up he runs out doors and I'm afraid he is going to get hit by a car. What can I do?

Jack Russells are natrually VERY hyper dogs. They needs lots and lots of play time and long walks or runs. They also need toys and activities that occupy their attention. Try putting some treats in a kong toy. That should keep him busy for a little while. Other than that just play with him alot. If you have a fenced in back yard let him run around or play fetch with him. Sorry to say but he will always be hyper, it's in his nature.

That's a tough situation. First, you need to understand a bit about the breed (the Jack Russell or Parson Russell). The breed is supposed to be very high energy anyway. When it became popular about 15 years ago, it led to a lot of backyard and puppy-mill breeding (which led to a lot of inferior stock--many dogs that are excessively hyperactive and easily over stimulated). Now I don't know the history of your dog, only that there are a lot of cute but hyperactive Parson Russells out there.

Now, given that background, here's what you need to do.

1. Get the dog in class. Even a hyper dog can be obedient. Furthermore, the class will train the humans around him.

2. Give the dog regular exercise. This isn't running in the backyard. It means taking him for a walk or a run every day. Ideally for a Parson Russell, you should aim for at least two 30 minute walks and three would be better.

3. Give the dog some intellectual stimulation. Try and work with it every day on a trick, even just 5 minutes per day. Get the dog into a sport (rally-o, flyball, agility). A tired dog is a good dog. And an intellectually-stimulated dog is a calm dog.

4. If you feel that your dog is especially reactive to particular things (doorbell ringing, other dogs, some people) than try looking at Leslie McDevitt's book Control Unleashed. It's a superb and practical book about how to regain control and focus for a dog that gets overstimulated too easily.

First he needs to be controlled so that he doesn't run outside and get in the street. Make sure when you let him out of the kennel he isn't going to be able to do this.
Next, this is the breed. Get used to HYPER mode.If it is too much contact a local JRT rescue group that can place him into a home that knows JRT's and can find him a good home.
Next, do NOT feed proteins like lamb or venison. They only add fuel to the fire. Also, lots of corn is bad for this type of dog. Enrolling in obedience traing is an absolute and if you have the time and energy Jack R.T are SUPER at agility.
Good Luck

Jack Russel Terriers are Very High Energy dogs. He needs a Job! You need to get him more exercise. You can try taking him on two long walks a day, and look into flyball or agility competitions. And is there any ways you can get your yard fenced in? So you don't have to worry about him getting hit by a car? And enrolling him in obedience classes will help also. It sounds like he needs to learn basic commands, such as 'sit' and 'stay.' I would also recommend talking to other Jack Russel owners, and getting a good book about Jack Russel Terriers.

When I first saw your question my answer was going to be "you don't" But for your problem there is a solution

Don't open the door unless he is on a leash, then when you open the door leave it open for a while, hold him back and when he gets calmer, or at least is bouncing less, walk out first then let him follow, then take him on a long walk. A very long walk, or hit the local dog park, or your own backyard for a game of fetch, you want to get him as tired as possible, then when you get home leave the door to his kennel open so he can go in and come out as he pleases, then let him hang out with you if he gets more energy play a game with him or work on teaching him tricks. He's bored you have to entertain him

The only way to curb his craziness is to clip a leash on him and give him daily regular exercise to tire him out, then when he is tired work on manners and training the basics like come, sit, stay ect. Jack russells are very hyper dogs to begin with and are not a easy trainer so they require daily attention and need a outlet to burn off energy and explore...since he won't stay put he needs to be on a leash, a longer one when your practicing stay and come so he can't run off. You could check into taking him to a obedience class but they are not a guarantee to make him learn or listen but if your stuck on how to proceed with training the basics it would be your best bet.

Make sure he gets daily excersise of at the least 1 hour a day and more if you can as they need as much excersise as they can get, i have a JRT and she runs around like crazy, try and give him a job to do, i'd search the web and see whats the best things to do to knacker him out. mentally make him tired and that will calm him down
