It is suposed to be very structured at most locations. Do as you are instructed by your supervisor and treat it like you would any job. I know this is your first job but you must have some idea of what personal responsibility is by now. Remember you are there to work and earn your paycheck. In the end it will be a valuable learning experience that you can carry with you to other jobs as this should teach you a good work-ethic.

Yeah, I agree - always take your jobs seriously. You may think to yourself, "Oh, it's McDonalds, whatever," but remember that you never want to burn bridges. A lot of employers look very fondly upon fast food service - it shows you're willing to put up with a lot and you work well with a team - and if they contact your former employer, you want to get a good reference. McDonald's is one of those places that likes to promote people from within - if I recall, our regional manager got her start as a cashier at 19 or something. Besides, when I left for college, they ended up giving me a few thousand dollars with a scholarship, which was very helpful and really awesome.
Technically, as far as what to learn, etc., it's an easy job. It is not, however, easy to have people treat you like an absolute moron all day. I worked at Mickey D's for three years and, though most people were cool, there were some of the rudest people I've ever met. People just assume you're a dope if you work in fast food.
Besides, ten years after the fact, and now in professional school, I still think McDonald's was the most important job I've ever held. I don't mean important like changing people's lives, I mean important like working with people from different backgrounds, working as a team, carrying my own weight.

If you like people and like to work at a fast pace, McDonald's is the place for you. When your Supervisor asks you to do something, do it quickly and cheerfully. Also, if your Supervisor tells you how to do that job better, listen, and then do it on your own next time without being asked. When it is not busy, tidy up around the counter and take a damp cleaning cloth to the other side of the counter. Make yourself look clean and neat - iron your uniform and keep it clean. If a customer complains, don't argue or try to explain it; ask them what you can do to keep them as a customer. Check with your Supervisor and then replace a meal, etc. Your Supervisor will be the one who makes the decision to make them happy. You should always check with your Supervisor before giving any food or drink away at first. And, don't sneak food to your friends, or steal any Happy Meal toys. That is stealing. I loved working at McDonald's and I have a M.A.

I spent 11 months there at mcdonalds when i was 18. Seriously, my last 2 weeks i felt like i was going crazy there. Customers are the worst. Some treat you like you are their personal slave. When customers yell its the worst because you cant say anything back so its really like you are a slave. I remember when i worked there, i thought if i owned this place i would tell people like that to get the "F" out of my restaurant....but you cant do that.
To tell the truth, i would rather collect cans from garbage bins and recycle them than ever do that job again.

It's probably an OK place to start, but be prepared for people to treat you like rubbish because you work at McDonalds. It also helps if you like to clean up piles of pickles where people have had pickle races down the windows. I think working at McD's (for four weeks) is where my disappointment with society in general began :)

Oh, do take it seriously. It is easy as pie once you learn. But, anything worth doing is worth doing well. A wise man once said that the secret to life was this... What ever you do, do it to the best of your ability. Good luck.

Take it seriously. You are dealing with the public, and the preparation of food. Would you like someone to prepare a meal for you, and not be serious about it?
