never heard of 5000 images per charge, but I think energy management is key. If your camera has viewfinder, use it as much as possible because using the LCD screen consumes much battery life. And turn the camera off when not in use. Also, transferring images via USB cord and camera into your computer uses the battery a lot too. Use a card reader for that purpose.

The best AA batteries you can buy for your camera are lithium. They cost 3-4 x more than alkaline, but last 10 x longer, maybe more. good luck

There is absolutely no way a battery for a digital camera will last for 5,000 shots. I would stay away from any manufacturer or retailer saying so.

One way to help out AA batteries is to turn the lcd off. You would be amazed at how much energy the lcd sucks from the batteries. Another good tip would be to minimize flash use.

Also I would look into using "Hybrid" AA batteries instead of just normal AA batteries. These batteries can be recharged overe and over like normal nimh batteries, but the don't drain like normal nimh batteries. If you charge a normal nimh battery and leave it sit for a week it will be drained by the time you use it. These batteries hold their charge very well, up to 80% retention after a year without use.

No battery will ever give you 5000 shots per charge. For cost effectiveness you should use rechargeable NiMH batteries. Any good brand will do, but make sure they are of a high capacity (something like 2500-2700mAh).

This type of battery will not reach it's full capacity until it's been through several charging cycles and will also drain of power when not used, so always make sure you give them a charge before you need to use the camera for the day.

You can also use non-rechargeable AA Lithium batteries (like Energizer e2). They last much longer than ordinary batteries (up to 600 shots, depending on your particular camera and usage) but are quite expensive, so not a good idea to use all the time. They are, however, good as a backup or if you have no access to power for charging your NiMH batteries.

To maximize battery life you should limit the use of the flash and the LCD (turn off in-between shots). You can also use the viewfinder (if you have one) to compose your shots, instead of relying on the LCD.
good luck...

If you can turn off the lcd picture preview display on your camera (that's usually a menu option on most digitals) that will help
and also you might want to look into getting rechargeable batteries.
