Okay, so I just got the Rebel XTi a couple weeks ago... It's my first DSLR, so I really know very little about lens etc... I want to be able to take headshots and I have with the kit lens but I want something better... I was told by a photographer the 70-300 IS would be great.... Will this really give me the best headshots?
Also, from what I've read, the 70 -200 L is amazing....

Thanks so much!

Yes, the Canon 70-200 mm L is amazing (there are four versions of this lens). I had the little 70-200 mm f 4 L--it was really really sharp.

If you want to do headshots, I would think that very inexpensive 50 mm f 1.8 would be better. It works, as your camera has a cropped sensor, as a 80 mm lens (a short telephoto), and thus, you'll get a bit 'closer" to the subject, without being too close. If you mount a 100 mm lens on your camera, it will work as a 165 mm, and that's a bit too 'long'.

So 70-200 mm lens will act like 112-320 mm--way too long for a headshot (at the high end), and is usable for a headshot at the low end (112 mm ish).

Try it out at the camera store. I think you'll like it.

for the portrait 'headshots' you're best bet is canon ef 50mm f/1.8.

Its gonna be just right for head to shoulders kind of photos, and it produces some beautiful bokeh

I have the 10-300IS L glasss and it is VERY heavy. I also have the 50mm 1.8 and they are correct, it would be better for what you want, not to mention way cheaper!
