The bulk of the above comes originally from the Hebrew scriptures and is based on the law of Moses, which Islam has named Sharia, so Islam is really not much different than classic Judaism. The non-conforming text is based on localized, tribal customs. Since Christianity constitutes the authentic fulfillment of all the prophecies of the Old Testament, in the person of Jesus Christ, there was never any need for Mohamed ... and Islam, as a religion, was already obsolete ... hundreds of years before it was ever invented. That said, Catholics believe that the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the Allah of Islam, and the ONE, triune God of Christianity are the same. This can easily be proved mathematically by the following equation: 1 X 1 X 1 = 1.

The word "Islam" is an Arabic word which means "submission to the will of God". This word comes from the same root as the Arabic word "salam", which means "peace". As such, the religion of Islam teaches that in order to achieve true peace of mind and surety of heart, one must submit to God and live according to His Divinely revealed Law. The most important truth that God revealed to mankind is that there is nothing divine or worthy of being worshipped except for Almighty God, thus all human beings should submit to Him.
The word "Muslim" means one who submits to the will of God, regardless of their race, nationality or ethnic background. Being a Muslim entails willful submission and active obedience to God, and living in accordance with His message. Some people mistakenly believe that Islam is just a religion for Arabs, but nothing could be further from the truth. Not only are there converts to Islam in every corner of the world, especially in England and America, but by taking a look at the Muslim World from Bosnia to Nigeria, and from Indonesia to Morocco, one can clearly see that Muslims come from many various races, ethnic groups and nationalities. It is also interesting to note that in actuality, more than 80% of all Muslims are not Arabs - there are more Muslims in Indonesia than in the whole Arab World! So though even though it is true that most Arabs are Muslims, the large majority of Muslims are not Arabs. However, anyone who submits completely to God and worships Him alone is a Muslim.

The answers that have already been given are spot on.
Islam is derived from the word 'Salam' which means peace and security. A Muslim is one who submits their will to Allah (swt).

A more literal translation of Islam would be its root word salam (peace) but figuratively it means submit to the will of God.
Muslim means one who submits to the will of God.

You have some good answers here.
Arabic is one of the Semitic languages. The word in Syriac 'ašlem, to make peace, surrender, derived stem of šlem. The Arabic word 'islām, submission, derrives from 'aslama, to surrender, resign oneself.
Arabic 'muslim', one who surrenders, active participle of 'aslama', to surrender. The variation spelling moslem (adjective) - of or relating to or supporting Islamism; "Islamic art" and Muslem (adjective, noun), plural -lems, -lem
We get the English name, Islamic from the Arabic around 1790, prior to this date we called Muslims - Muhammadism (1614 on) or Ismaelism (1604).
the term Muhammadanism was used by colonial Europeans, who saw a religion created by Muhammad - is offensive to Muslims who believe that Allah, not Muhammad, founded their religion. Scholars used the latter name - which is derrived from Ishmaelite, a name formerly given (esp. by Jews) to Arabs, as descendants of Ishmael (q.v.), and in part from Arabic Ismailiy, name of the Shiite sect that after 765 C.E. followed the Imamship through descendants of Ismail (Arabic for Ishmael), eldest son of Jafar, the sixth Imam.
The Ismailians were not numerous, but among them were the powerful Fatimid dynasty in Egypt and the Assassins, both of whom loomed large in European imagination.
Most muslims however follow the Deen (Arabic: دين) -commonly translated as "religion", "way" or "path". The Arabic word is almost certainly a loan from the Aramaic dīnā, so does the Hebrew dīn which have an identical meaning within the Jewish tradition. The Hebrew word is in turn a 6th century BC loan from the Old Persian dēn- which meant the system of ritual practices of the (Zoroastrian) state religion.
Muslims in turn will refer to themself as Mu'min (Arabic: مؤمن) "believer", and denoting a Muslim that has complete submission to the will of God (Allah), and has faith firmly established in his heart.
