Religion , or the lack of it should have nothing to do with government operations .

What gives we recently voted a big eared, red necked monkey with a bunch of free loading friends & family and a pencil into office now, how is that worst then an Atheist for President of America?

The main benefit would be that there would not be any religious propaganda. This is not to assume that all atheist think alike so other "benefits" could not really be there. I know atheist that are not for gay marriage. Their basis is not religious but of some other nature. However I don't believe we would be doing the religious motivated things that we are doing now like giving evangelical church organizations federal money.
I don't see any down side of a president being an atheist.

When dealing with potentially volatile situations involving other countries (say, somewhere in the Middle East), wherein differences in religious belief could play an important role (say, tensions between Christianity and Islam), an atheist president probably wouldn't be increasing tensions by flaunting his own Christianity, and calling the US a Christian nation every chance he got.

We might actually get a President who takes his oath to protect and uphold the Constitution seriously.
Actually there would be no such thing as an "atheist President"--merely a President who happens to be an atheist.

We have already had an atheist President. Thomas Jefferson was a deist. (3rd President) George Washington was not a practicing Christian. He was a cultural Christian.
The difference between deism and atheism is almost semantics.

Since not all atheists are alike I can tell you what I would do as an atheist president. I would stop wasting money trying to keep stem cell research at bay. I would stop wasting money debating if gay marriage is constitutional or not. I would stop wasting money protesting abortion. I would pull our men and women out of Iraq. Theres a lot more but I don't want to start ranting.

Freedom FROM religion!
No dogma taught in schools... anywhere!
No more 'pro life' dickheads.
Disbandment of the KKK.
No more segregation!
Legal Euthenasia.
Equal rights for homosexual and lesbian couples!
Equal justice for all colours!
Fatal sentencing or at least mental health treatment/deprogramming for all people who claim 'god told me to do it'.
Legal prostitution!
No more billboards or street signs stating 'jesus loves you' or 'repent now and be saved'...!
One nation under concience, instead of one nation under immaginary being!
Leaders no longer look for 'signs from god' and instead use reasoning to make decissions.
Ohh, concience votes being made based on ones own concience, not just dogma and theology...

Lacking belief in the gods is not, nor should it be a prerequisite for being a good President. but neither should it make someone un-electable.
It is, however, more in line with our de facto, de jure SECULAR country.

Take examples from the countries where atheism was the official religion in state. You should be able to identify them easily. People in there risked a bullet to get out those times.
