And I understand killing Bambi is wrong, but I am NOT the one doing the killing, he is, in North Carolina, there is a WAY overpopulation of Deer, I'd rather see it get killed by a gun than suffering in the middle of the road by being hit by a car, which happens quite often in my area. I would like to spend around $200-250, and yes, I am very stingy!

It depends on where you are as well. Some states require deer hunters use Shotguns instead of rifles. But if you want a cheap rifle that can take down a deer. Look for a Mosin Nagant M38 or M44. Most of them are right around $100 dollars or less and are competent shooters. They are WW2 surplus russian military so dont be surprised if they look old.
It all depends on how much you want to spend. If you want to spend a couple hundred dollars (this is how much all the rifles mentioned so far will cost) then I recommend a remington 700 in either .308 or 30-06.
If your state requires shotgun only hunting then I would go with a Remington 870.

The gun you choose should be based upon the distance you plan to shoot from. If you only plan to fire the firearm from 100 yards or less I would suggest a 30/30 or old military surplus rifle. Over 100 but less than 500 I would look at any rifle chambered from .308 to 300 mag. A used rifle will be much less expensive and usually can be very dependable. If you only plan to make short distanced shots you might even look at a handgun. A single shot or single action revolver firing the .45 colt round would be perfect for whitetail deer.

Remington 870 Express. My recommendation is to try not to be too stingy. Better to get him a gift card then or it might not get used. But you can get a 870 for around $275 to $330 brand new and Remington is offering a $30 mail in rebate if purchased before 12/31/2007. And make it a 12 gauge, with a fully riffled barrel and rifled sights. This gun will get a deer out at 150 yards with good practice. And only use sabot slugs.
Good luck hope this helps.

A 20 ga shotgun with a slug barrel will harvest deer out to one hundred yards properly. i do no longer comprehend the place you reside yet whilst there are any solid huge gun shops flow seek for a solid used Mauser made everywhere interior the international. as long because of the fact the rifling isn't worn or pitted and the receiver section shows no sign of corrosion then you certainly might desire to be waiting to %. one in all those up in bolt action everywhere sort $seventy 5-a hundred twenty five nevertheless. How ever ask questions approximately all the rifles. The previous armed forces rifles ought to are available in from very solid to junk iron. communicate with countless the older adult men and ask suggestion on spot. There additionally could be some very solid buys on older interest rifles, even regardless of the undeniable fact that earlier you purchase look at lots of rifles and communicate with anybody who will answer your questions. you will quickly have the certainty to correctly known the solid ones from the junk. Then spend your funds. A .308 is inexpensive to shoot because of the fact of surplus armed forces ammo. lower back ask questions and study forms of ammo and what's going to cut back to rubble a gun and what won't. maximum aged timers are flattered you want their opinion and could fill your head with years of adventure in case you ask right. be conscious: i'm a westerner who looks at rifles, shotguns and pistols as kit for residing out of city. incredibly does not remember lots as sensible and the previous armed forces rifles in bolt action are the main sensible weapons ever made.

my husband deerhunts and he says to get a 30-30. But a 30-06 is a more reasonable rifle for deer hunting. It depends on HOW much money you want to spend. Have a good time shopping for them....personally I would go to a pawn shop if you know a reputable one...or a gun shop but Wal-Mart has a pretty good sporting goods dept. I hate Wal-Mart myself...they treat their employees very badly. Merry Christmas

The best choice for your purpose is a good used or new 30-06, 308 caliber in Remington or Savage or Mossberg Brand.* Or a Savage in 30-30 caliber.*

for $250, you can get a Remingto 710, or a Savage rifle/scope combo, I think. You should be able to find a used 30-30 for that price at a local pawn shop or gun store.

Check out the H&R/NEF1871 Handi-Rifles. You can get him one in .30-30 WCF, .308 Win or .30-'06 Sprfld at a very modest price.
These rifles are single-shot break open guns. They are inexpensive, ugly, and absolutely reliable.

Id look at a Savage. Maybe a 30-06 or 243. Id talk to the gun shop owner. You might find something used, also. Does George Washington rub his eyes when you take him out of your purse (from having been in the dark so long?)
