I am in a dispute with my former employer regarding unemployment benefits. I don't know what the human resources department will say about me and I have thought about asking prospective employers not to contact them. What do managers usually think when you ask them not to contact your previous employer?

The only time I have ever heard of someone being able to say that and not be looked down on was when my former colleague said that she had to listen to constant verbal abuse from her previous employer. They honoured her wish and hired her anyways because they still had other good references. In all other instances, it backfired on the applicant. In your case, they may see you as a troublemaker even though you are right.

If it's a current employer, they'd understand. But if you ask them not to contact a previous employer you are no longer working for, they're going to assume that something was wrong.
