my neighbor has a pit bull named rocko. Rocko is about 5 and he's the sweetest thing, never showed any signs of aggression. but when they got him, the other neighbors' freaked out and made them chain him up and have all these restrictions because they were afraid. why are people afraid of pit bulls even if the dog is nice?

They will eventually learn that he is a nice dog. He will probably be more well behaved than all the other dogs in the neighborhood. Where I used to live most of our neighbors loved our American Pit Bull Terrier, but we had a few neighbors who were quite leery of her. When we would take our daily walks we would get questions like "Is she aggressive?" "Will she bite out children?" "Has she attacked anyone before?" Questions that Most dogs owners don't hear on a regular basis. But after we lived there for a while they realized that my dog was not a threat to them at all. Especially after they saw a few of the other neighbors come over to play fetch with us. Maybe you can show your neighbors that Rocko really is a nice dog.

Pit bulls have a rep. All those dog attacks on children and people in the news, most of the dogs that do it have pit in them. But the news doesnt show the other attacks. Any dog can be aggressive, pit bulls are just looked down opon.
My dad has a pit bull and he is the sweetest thing in the world. All he wants is for you to pet him and hug on him.
It all depends on the dog though and how people train them or treat them. Also it can be the parents and how aggressive they are too. Pits, German Shepards, Dobermen, Chows, tons of dogs have aggression problems, its just how the owner deals with them.
My golden is more aggressive then our pit bull, which one would you trust to go up to and just pet?
Id pick the golden.. and im sure alot of other people would too.

I volunteer at an animal shelter in Philadelphia and 80% of the dogs we get are pits or pit mixes. Speaking from experience, they are big babies. They like to curl in your lap (if they are small enough to fit or even if they're not) and give kisses. The negative image can be attributed to the media and bad owners. The media attributes attacks to pits even if the dog is not a pit because it will get them higher ratings (I've seen pictures of so called pits that were nothing of the sort). You can't trust any dog that has a bad owner and bad breeding also contributes to some of the dogs you hear about that "snap". I haven't ever owned one, but I plan to in the future.

The media makes them out to be horrible mean dogs. I have a pit bull and he is also the sweetest thing. I have heard of a lot more people getting attacked by little yappy dogs then pit bulls. I think that it is all about how you raise you pet.

This is coming from a previous owner of a Pit who I raised from a pup. Never was she abused, fought, starved for food. She was socialized, went to school was raised around a child and other animals. Then one day she "snapped". Last Monday we put her down. Not all are like this but some are "HARDWIRED", and even with some of the most elegant training, it is hard to break. Will I ver get another Pit. Yes. We also have a Beagle and a Giant Schnauzer. So I am not partial to just the Pit breed.

I have two pitbulls and i know that 2 of my three neighbors are afraid of one of them. (The male has the big square face where the female doesn't). Anyways, i was asked to chain them up in my fenced back yard but i told them no. I have worked out a schedule with the neighbors and we share time in the yard. This has worked out for the past 3 years without any problems. My dogs are big babies and it's the cocker spaniel that I have that you have to watch.

Most dogs that get the stereo type aggressive are because they had bad owners who made they mean. Most dogs aren't really mean they are trying to protect. When dogs bark it is to keep that person at bay. Dogs attack out of fear and instinct. The funny thing is people are so scared of pit bulls (staffies) and they are really good with children. I have two staffie mixes and they play with my 8month old nephew of course under my supervision but they understand that he is little and are really tentative to him.

I wouldnt have given in to the ignorant neighbors..

I watched "animal cops houston" on animal planet, and the cops found a dog fight training place where there were 63 pit bulls including babies. They were taken to the aspca, and all of them were euthanized as soon as they got the court order saying their new owner was the aspca. I dont know why the babies were killed, they were a few weeks old.

I don't know. I work for a vet and see lots of pit bulls and it basically comes down to how well they are trained and who their owners are...irresponsible owner equals untrustworthy pit. I almost got my face bit off by a pit that had let me pet him and play with him(irresponsible owner) and yet I still love them!
