Lauras De.. and Wayne C are both correct.

If Truman had recognised Vietnam as an independent country in 1945 the "First Indochina War" would probably not have occurred. Also, it was Truman who armed the French, and assisted with US troops, in fight against the Viet Minh who were fighting for independence from the French.

It was Eisenhower that first sent troops into Vietnam as part of the Second Indochina War. It was Eisenhower that violated all aspects of the 1954 Geneva Agreements, installing the Catholic dictator Ngo Dien Diem in a country of 85% Buddhists and refusing to allow national elections before June 1956 as required by the 1954 Geneva Agreements. It was also Eisenhower who created the internationally illegal "Republic of South Vietnam".

The origins of US involvement go back to President Truman.

After the war Northern Officials confirmed the Domino Theory.

The link is a time line from WWII. Back then the US was funding Ho Chi Mihn to harass the Japanese and rescue downed pilots if possible.

The 2nd is a Vietnamese run site out of Orange County California.

Johnson is the one who really got the war going, though we had 'advisors' there long before. I would blame Johnson.

But Nixon got elected on a promise to end the war and kept it going another 4 years for his own purposes. About half the costs, half the deaths, etc., happened under Nixon's watch, so I'd say he shares the blame.

Why worry about someone to blame ? Would it bring back all the Soldiers that gave their life? How about learning from our past to deal with the future.

The President of S. Vietnam that was assasinated. Had he taken care of his people instead of abusing them then the VietCong and NVA would not have had the support if the peasant class.

Johnson.. Kennedy had advisors in Iraq but did not want to go to war and had plans to pull the advisors out if it got any worse. Johnson and Nixon escalated it.
