You don't need to pray to a deity to benefit from prayer. Think meditation --the two are not so far removed.
When people pray (or meditate) they focus on one or two things and clear the remaining clutter from their minds. This reduces stress, lowers the heart rate and blood pressure, instills a sense of peace, and allows solutions to everyday problems to become more clear, thus providing a feeling of confidence and strength.

It's just only a question about what you expect by praying to someone or anything. It's not urgently a God you have to talk to. Also talking to half-empty tin of baked beans could have good results - if you really believe the tin could be helpful for you. Or let me word it more general: Any kind of believe would be helpful for a prayer.

No belief in God is required. If you pray for something, it will focus your mind on that goal, and mobilize your subconscous. The more you can mobilize your inner emotional resources, the better it will work. The fact that you might be connecting with God and not know it, is not a bad thing.

Using prayer is like using a telephone. There is no power in a telephone. What matters is Who is on the other end.

Why would you pray if you don't believe in God? Not believing in God makes me think that you don't believe in anything to do with Him, including prayer.

Really!
I guess a person could pray to a rock or a tree, who knew!
53 years of prayer and I have been praying incorrectly, darn!
I thought I had heard it all, I guess not!
"Peace be always with you."

It depends on to whom you pray and what you pray for and the target you prEy in. Faith is an absolutely essential prerequisite for prayer.
