Hello, I was wondering what the Irish Army is like specfically the Infantry corps as I am a 15 year old American, I have Irish ancestors and plan on moving to Ireland once i finish High School. I would liek to know specifcally the services I am aware service is generally under UN, government, and Dáil Éireann. I am wondering also what are the odds of deployment. Finally what is the pay, and where do foreign recruits stay if no residency. Thank you.

You can't join without being an Resident of Ireland and you wont be allowed a Residency just to become a member of the Irish Defence Forces or part time Reserve Defence Forces.

The Irish are not with NATO but serve with the U.N. candidates for overseas must have at least two years service before they are allowed to volunteer for U.N. Service, and pass a strict medical and other tests, priority goes to specialist troops, Transport, Engineers, Communications, Medic's as well as ordinary infantrymen.

the Reserve Defence Force are only allowed as defined by the Irish Constitution to serve in the Republic of Ireland.

The Reserves Defence Forces train one night a week, one weekend or two weekends a month and have a 7 - 14 week training camp depending upon which stage they are in in the Reserve Service.

The Permanent Defence Forces members get accommodation in Military Barracks, the Reserve when not involved in training stay at their own homes.

Both require you to volunteer but it depends if there are any vacancies in both the P.D.F and R.D.F.

The type of Reserve unit you can join depends on what units are located in the area you live.

The Reserve also has a Naval Reserve Section.

hopefully "Conranger" will see this question and answer you, he is Ex Irish Army. All I know is, I think they only take one intake a year, friends of mine tried to join and were too old so they ended up joining the British Army, Royal Irish Rangers.

Why would you want to serve another country's armed forces apart from your own country? - unless you cannot get into the U.S. armed forces..
