Take short pieces of Scotch tape and lay them sticky side up around the tree. Whenever he comes near the tree, he'll get this stuff stuck to his toes, which he will HATE. Eventually, he will associate that tree with discomfort around his toes and stay away.
It worked for me. Hope this works for you!

That's a toughie- and in most cases I'd say you don't.
Making it an unpleasant experience for him might be the only thing you can do. Ways to do that can include using bite deterrent to make it taste bad (mine chew on it- if yours doesn't then it won't help). If it's actually jumping and not just walking up- placing sticky tape around it isn't going to help. Cats hate loud noises, so if you're around and you see him do it use something that is loud and startling. You could also arm yourself with a squirt gun. Problem is- how do you prevent the temptation when you're NOT home?
There are products designed to set off alarms whenever cats jump up on a couch or counter. That might be rigable to alarm if the cat gets near the tree.
There are also spray deterrents that have a smell cats hate. Keep in mind- people don't like them much, either.
Go here to see some products that might be useful for deterrents:

One thing you might try is covering the tree with a blanket. Not sure this will help- but it will remove the visual temptations (mostly) and might be of use. Try it when you're home and see if that helps. Be gentle with the tree- having an extra set of hands would probably make it easier to cover without disturbing the decorations too much (do this after lights are off!)
Good luck with your kitty and Happy Holidays!

LOL, my little kitty LOVED the tree, unfortunately the tree didn't love him.
In the middle of the night I'd be woken up by the sound of ornaments crashing to the floor, after only a week the lights shorted out for some reason, the garland was trashed...
Its impossible if your cat is determined except to not allow your cat in the room with the tree unattended.

Go to petsmart or petco and by some deterrent spray. You can spray around or on your tree, and it should keep the cat off the tree. We've had really good luck with it! You can't smell it, and it is safe for your cat but there is something in it that the cat doesn't like.

Try usig vicks vapor rub on some tissue at the base branches. They do not like the smell of it and it will keep them from the tree.

Get a water gun and squirt him every time he gets near the tree. He'll get the message.
