Its where her heart was. Where your treasure is, there will our hearts be also.
I read the account of Lot's wife and was really taken aback by a few things that I read there.
As a kid hearing this story I always assumed that Lot and His family were anxious to get out of Sodom and Gomorrah, but when I read that the angels had to almost drag them out of there it really gave me pause. When the angels had even entered the city, who doyou think was sitting at the gates of Sodom and Gomorrah? Lot! Only the elders of a city sat at its gates. This was a city that was full of sin and to be judged by God. How did Lot earn such a high position in such a city as this?
In Proverbs 31 on the Virtueous Woman, Her husband sits at the gates of the city with the elders with pride because his wife is virtueous and a woman of worth. Lot's wife is such a contrast to this picture of a virtueous woman. Sure, her husband sits at the gates too..but look at what kind of city... but I believe that over the years she had become dull and numb to the sin that was around her. Her heart loved this city for all that it offered.

There is a phrase in the New Testament" remember Lot's wife"
THe sad thing about this woman was that she was neither in the evil city, nor was she safe in the mountains. She was in that middle ground.
Its like us today. If we are not for the Lord and are sitting on the fence as believers then we have lost our saltiness just as lot's wife did. On the earth we are to be those that the Lord preservers others with. Our words should be seasoned with salt. Salt has the taste element.. it also has a perserving element as well as a cleansing element. The salt that Lot's wife turned into was useless. May our hearts never be so attached to this world that God will utterly judge one day that we too will " glance " back to look at. We need to be those looking away. UNTO JESUS the author and perfector of our faith.

We need to grab the hands of those that the Lord has put with us and RUN with endurance, the race set before us.
This account in the bible is so sobering. Today the whole world works overtime to desensitize us. May we never loose our discerning spirit. May we be sharp and aware. May the Lord preserve all the dear brothers and sisters in this evil age we live in.

Good sobering question brother Don

It would seem that she wasn't whole hearted about following God's will and had a desire to go back to the amenities that were available to her in the sinful city that is a snapshot of the godless world.

Luke 17:24 For the Son of Man in his day will be like the lightning, which flashes and lights up the sky from one end to the other. 25 But first he must suffer many things and be rejected by this generation. 26 "Just as it was in the days of Noah, so also will it be in the days of the Son of Man. 27 People were eating, drinking, marrying and being given in marriage up to the day Noah entered the ark. Then the flood came and destroyed them all.

28 "It was the same in the days of Lot. People were eating and drinking, buying and selling, planting and building. 29 But the day Lot left Sodom, fire and sulfur rained down from heaven and destroyed them all. 30 "It will be just like this on the day the Son of Man is revealed. 31 On that day no one who is on the roof of his house, with his goods inside, should go down to get them. Likewise, no one in the field should go back for anything. 32 Remember Lot's wife!

33 Whoever tries to keep his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life will preserve it.

There is pleasure in sin for a season. She was reluctant to leave the enticements of sin behind.

The primary reason that God destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah was because of the perverted lifestyle of the people. Many of the men were lying with men and the women lying with women. Animals do not even act like that!

It's hard not to wish for something once it is no longer available. Her looking back is at times interpretted as her wishing to continue in the sinful ways of the doomed city. A refusal to give up the lust and hedonism god commanded they leave behind.

It was her home, and obviously she had people /nieghbors perhaps that she cared for , maybe it was pity that compelled her ., maybe she heard a scream , a familiar voice that she recognized anywhere someone who meant alot to her we could only imagine the tortured sounds she heard that day.........or just as our nature is , we are rebellious against what we are told to do and not to do...sad but true......Eve led up that example...lol...
last guess , we (women) are very nosey and curious creatures, we want to hear it all , see it all, and definitely know it all...lol....maybe her curiousity got the best of her...Great question , interesting too! Have fun with all of your answeres today! ~ Leah

Our Lord's design in these words, is to instruct his followers by this instance, not to look back in their flight, or to turn back to their houses, to save their goods, when the desolation of Jerusalem was coming on, lest they should suffer in it; and to warn all professors of religion, in all ages, against looking back to things that are behind, or turning their backs on him, in a time of distress and persecution; since such are not fit for the kingdom of God; and in these God has no delight and pleasure.

Lot's wife truly did become this "pillar" of salt!; ...for other writers such as Josephus report, that he saw this pillar of salt in his time; and Irenaeus asserts, that it was in being when he lived; and modern writers, as Burchardus and Adrichomius, speak of it as still existing; and the Jerusalem "paraphrast" on (Genesis 19:26) says it shall endure till the time the resurrection comes, in which the dead shall live: the reason of her becoming a pillar of salt, the Jews say, is, that she sinned by salt, and so was punished by salt.

Wow what a mighty God we serve when He speaks through self-proclaimed atheists like Lobo! (Great job LOBO!!!!) His answer speaks volumes - God seeks to destroy sin in your life so that you can fellowship with Him. It IS our human tendency & fallen nature to seek out sin rather than God, so looking back, even if its in a rear view mirror will always lead us embittered, regretful, doubtful, nostalgic? as if we are reliving the sin in conflicted pool of emotions. We must fight our fallen nature daily, putting trust in the Lord in faith, obedience & repentance so that we may continually walk in His victory! The process is ongoing and we must endure until the end!

She was curious and not blindly faithful. Also, the translation originally said that she turned into a puff of smoke not a pillar of salt which probably says that she decided to stay behind rather than leave with the rest.

One excuse would be just human nature and curiosity. The other thing was that they were leaving friends and all possessions behind and she was wondered what was happening to them. The bottom line is she disobeyed God and paid the price.
