the sodium in the chips and the diet soda may have caused the blood pressure to go up. However i don't believe they were the sole cause. Especially if the person is on some type of blood pressure medication and taking it as prescribed.

In isolation, the chips and diet coke might not be much of a cause. But how often does the person have that same snack? A lifetime of chips and caffeine-laced drinks will have an effect that an isolated snack would not.

As to the mechanism, it could be anything. Depends on what the guy is accustomed to eating. Could be that he has some arterial blockage, forcing the heart to pump harder to get through reduced arterial apertures. Could be atherosclerosis causing the heart to pump harder due to arterial stiffness. Could be that his blood chemistry has been hosed up to interfere with the angiotension conversion cycle. In the absence of more information, there is no good answer.

there is some reasons for hypertension.
1- sodium: when you consume alot of salt or salty things, your blood sodium will increase and it absorbs water and makes your plasma increased and it makes your blood pressure increase.
2- fats specially cholesterol but ldl not hdl. which accumulated in your veins and thighten veins so blood cant pass normally.
3- being sedentary and having no exercise
am a student of msc in exercise physiology and have some advices to you:
1- cut down on salt, fats (specially animal ones) use olive oil, drink alot of money and have alot of veg and fruites. and the most important advise: you need some exercise so try this:
run atleast 15 minutes a day with no pressure on you very light like jugging. it helps you alot.

Excessive sodium intake will make the body retain water. that water is stored in the interstitial space of the body. ie outside the cells. The blood vessels for whatever reason cannot expand enough to compensate for the extra fluid. If the person continues to retain fluids, it can back up into the lungs causing what is called a flash pulmonary edema.

Chips contain salt. Ingested salt retains fluid in your body. Excess fluid raises blood pressure.
