I have read most of the answers posted before mine. Some of the answers were good, some I won't mention, and some stood out to me because of the truth in them and the effort put into answering the question. Denver, MatthewP (SL), & gsuslvsU all made quite a statement.
To some of the others, there is in fact only 1 true God, 1 Savior, and 1 road to salvation. Sorry, 2 conflicting "truths" can't both be true. Yahweh (a.k.a. Jehovah, "the Great I AM", etc.) is the one and only true God.
Let's start with the verse most people have at least heard of, John 3:16, which says, "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life." NKJV. Then, let's jump to John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, 'I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.'" So, clearly, Christ Jesus (the Messiah, the Annointed One) is the key to salvation.
Like the others were saying, you have to believe with your heart that Jesus is Lord, Jesus is your redeemer, Jesus is one with God. This brings us to Romans 10:9-11, "...if you confess with your mouth the Lord Jesus and believe in your heart that God has raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For with the heart one believes unto righteousness, and with the mouth confession is made unto salvation. For the Scripture says, 'Whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.'"
In a way, asking God into your heart is a metaphor. Love has always been associated with the heart. This is where many people get twisted. Firstly, when we live in sin, greed and selfishness drive our behavior. In a manner of speaking, our hearts are filled with greed. Some people try to live for others, doing good, giving generously, etc. In effect, they have love in their hearts, and it shows in their actions. Where the twisting comes in is that doing good for human reasons and human love is never going to be enough to get into Heaven (see Romans 3:23, "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God").
I'm not saying that we are not to do good. Nooooooo! What I'm saying is that doing good in and of itself will never grant salvation unto anyone. We have to believe God's word (the Bible), we have to believe in Christ Jesus 100% (we can't believe in only the prophet part of Him, or only the human part of Him, or only the divine part of Him, etc. We must believe that He is fully God and was both fully God and fully Human for the 33 or so years which He spent among us.), and we have to love God. Doing good to get into favor with God will never work. Doing good because we love God and want to do His will is wonderful.
Believe in your heart the whole truth about God and Jesus. Then ask God to forgive your sins and speak the words, that you believe that Jesus is YOUR PERSONAL savior. Christianity is NOT a religion. Christianity and salvation are both dependent upon a PERSONAL relationship with Jesus.
The ultimate truth is outlined in the Bible. However, it has to be supernaturally revealed to you. I Corinthians 2:14 says, "But the natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him; nor can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned." See also Matthew 16:15-17. It relates a dialogue between Jesus, Simon Peter, and the other Disciples. "He said to them, 'But who do you say that I am?'
Simon Peter answered and said, 'You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.'
Jesus answered and said to him, 'Blessed are you, Simon Bar-Jonah, for flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but My Father who is in heaven.'"
If you don't see this unequivocal truth, either God hasn't revealed it to you as yet, or you're ignoring God. But it is God's desire that everyone be saved. Jesus was born to a Jewish mother, but He sent his Disciples out with the instruction to preach God's Word to the whole world - to every last one of us.
Love God. Believe that Jesus died for your sins and rose (was resurrected) on the third day. Confess (speak or repeat) that Jesus is your personal Lord and Savior. God created us with free will. We can choose to accept His invitation, His plan for our salvation, or we can try to find salvation on our own, or we can reject God and salvation altogether. Choose carefully.
God bless y'all.

Awesome answers here!! First its important to believe Jesus Christ is God. Other wise i guess it would be a moot point. Those who shared about the bible are right on. It important to know what your getting into before you ask him into your heart. I will share with you how I have lead others in prayer (talking to God). This prayer does need to come from a heart felt, honest, desire. There is no perfect way to do it. Its nice to have someone else there to pray with you but its not necessary cause the ones who matter are there - you and the Lord. Just speak out loud -
Lord Jesus i am a sinner, forgive me for my sins, I believe that you are God, you died for me on the cross, and rose again to take away my sins and give me eternal life with you. Come and fill me with your holy spirit - to overflowing. I desire to live my life for you. Thank you Lord. In Jesus name, Amen

It is pretty delicate but after considering God and his love and sacrifice.. a prayer can be prayed acknowledging who God is: Creator, Sustainer - then the stating of knowing that you have sinned and need his forgiveness, invite the Holy Spirit into your life to teach, guide and comfort you, and then that Jesus is your Lord and Savior. Despite what was written above - we are asked to make a public acknowledgement of our faith.
When prayed with a sincere heart... God comes!! And our lives are so wonderfully changed, and we have the assurance of God's presence and eternal life.

2 scriptures come to mind for your answer. The first is Isaiah 1:15 "And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide mine eyes from you. Yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear; your hands are full of blood." What God is saying is that "sin" hides His face from us. "Sin" creates a barrier between you and God that will block your prayers from ever reaching His ears. So, what prayer's will God hear from non-believer's? The prayer of repentance is a must to start a relationship with God. The second verse is found in James 4:8. "Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you." That needs no explaining. If you truly want the full assurance that God is with you and hears your prayers, give Him your heart and obey His Word.

Nothing specific needs to be said.. It's really all about the heart. You have to believe Jesus died for you and realize how badly you need him. After that it just kind of comes naturally. You can be yourself with God, after all he made you.

First off, you have to understand the laws of God and realize that when you break them, you sin.
And then understand that all who sin will die in sin and their souls will be cast into hell.
For the soul of a man is alive, but when he realizes he is a breaker of the laws of God, his spirit dies in him. And if his spirit remains dead till the time he suffers physical death, his soul is taken to the place were the dead are held.
So what does a man need to do to escape this place of torment? He needs to be born again.
So what is it to be born again? The man realizes that he is a sinner and in need of forgiveness. He also realizes that God sent his Son so that whoever believes in him will be born again in their spirit. Their spirit that was dead is reborn, born again, alive again through God's Son.
So you must understand that all men are sinners and if not forgiven, will die in their sins and spend all eternity in torment.
Then you must believe in Jesus Christ with all of your heart. And ask for the forgiveness of your sins, repenting from them.
If you believe with all of your heart, he will come into your heart like a mighty wind. Your heart will be changed and all things will be made knew. Because for the first time since your spirit was slain by sin, it is alive. And the love that is in your heart will be greater then you could ever imagine.
You will be a new creature in Christ. Then you need to find a place to worship and learn the truth of God.

No, there is no really special thing that you say when recieving God into your heart. You just pray with someone close to you, or someone close with the Christian/Catholic faith and they ask God to accept you into his heart, so on, so forth, and forgive me for my sins, blah, blah, blah. At SpringHill, a camp in upnorth Michigan, you have a choice of doing this. I did it, and I felt SO much better. I felt like I was one w/God, and i'm not even that religious even though I am Catholic. Good Luck and God Bless!

It's something you say when you are wanting to become a Christian. You acknowledge to God that you are indeed a sinner and ask Him to forgive you for your sins. You then ask Jesus to come live in your heart and be your King of Kings. It doesn't end there. It's a daily, loving relationship with Him.

No all you do is pray to God and tell him to come into your life and lead you on the right path to the truth. But you need to be sincere about your prayer or else it will never happen, God knows your heart

that mean you believe God and his word, you have weighed out the cost to follow Chirst, leave your life of sin and obey his word.
you will seek after him, because you know he is truth! and then to you he has promised the COMFORTER, the Holy Spirit to lead you on your way. until you see Jesus Christ face to face in heaven. where there will be no more tears and pain....forever.
how do you invite Jesus in your life.
A- acknowledge you have sinned (went against God)
B-believe in your heart that Jesus is the son of God, and God raised him from the dead.
C-confess your sin to God
and salvation is a free gift, but you must always run after God and allow him to change you by his doing, not your own!
