LOL! sorry. Her age has nothing to do with anything. No one is exempt because of how old they are. An 80 year old needs confession as much as a 15 year old.

Thank you for wanting to know more about your Faith. It's very encouraging. If you're trying to learn about it, there are some great websites that can help, like www.catholic.com. Write me anytime if you like if you have questions.

God bless.

Your question is vague. Are you asking if your mother is actually taking communion each time she goes to church, even thought she doesn't go to confession? Is your question about being told that because she is over 60 she doesn't need to go to confession?

If it's the first, there's no way for us to know if she's receiving communion. It's also not necessary to "go to confession" each time she goes to Mass. Within the Mass there is a confession and prayer for forgiveness. For example:

ALL: I confess to almighty God,
and to you, my brothers and sisters,
that I have sinned through my own fault,
in my thoughts and in my words,
in what I have done,
and in what I have failed to do;
and I ask blessed Mary, ever virgin,
all the angels and saints,
and you, my brothers and sisters,
to pray for me to the Lord, our God.
PRIEST: May almighty God have mercy on us, forgive us our sins, and bring us to everlasting life.
ALL: Amen.

If the question is whether or not she is to go to formal confession because she is over 60. I have never heard of that. The connection to the larger community is important.
"Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The fervent prayer of a righteous person is very powerful." James 5:16

Well, what she thinks (about not having to avail oneself of the Sacrament of Reconciliation after a certain age) is not accurate.

Instead of attributing this to "lies," I would recommend charity. Recognize that she might be reluctant; confession can seem insurmountable when one examines their conscience after a long time. Encourage her instead. She can have peace after returning to the sacrament. I am sure that she will be welcomed with love and comfort.

For that matter....so will you, if you so desire to return to the faith.

Catholics should receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation whenever he or she has completely cut oneself off from God (in the state of mortal sin) and at least as once a year.

Catholics may receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation whenever he or she feels that they need to be reconciled to God and the Church.

For more information, see the Catechism of the Catholic Church, section 1422 and following: http://www.usccb.org/catechism/text/pt2sect2chpt2.htm

With love in Christ.

I am not her Spiritual Director, and it would be improper for me to make a serious call on this....but....

From what you have said....she needs to go make her Confession....TODAY!

As for "being over 60"...any Priest who said that (and I'll bet you $100.00 no Priest ever said that to her) should be de-frocked.

Confession isn't mandatory, you know. Its doubtful the priest told her that, but she doesn't have to go unless she wants to.

Why does it matter anyway?

And btw... you need to use the word "doesn't", instead of "don't". If you talk with real english, you won't look like you're stupid unless you're spewing idiocy.

Would that mean that when someone is over 60 they can sin all they want?

She's lying. She needs to add that to her list of confessions also, lol.

the confession should be for persons of any age

yeah that's probably not true. either the priest doesn't know anything, or she lied.
