Hi Moms, I realize this may be a dumb question, but what do you do with your little one(s) when you have a doctor or dentist appt.? I don't have anyone to babysit.... I had an ob/gyn appt and fortunately my 20-month old stayed occupied in her stroller, but now that I have a dentist appt., don't see how that can work.... I guess I have to research babysitters, right? Any thoughts as to your own situations? Thanks :)

That's the downfall to being a stay at home parent. I have come across this issue many times. I finally found some friends through ECFE and we help each other out during these situations. I am very lucky to have this option. I know in some cities they have drop in daycare places that you can use for an hour or more. What about a grandma from church, they love the little kids and some spending cash might be nce for them.

If you can't hire a babysitter or find someone to at least accompany you on the appointment, you may have quite a challenge. I remember that I didn't stay as regular with my exams & check-ups during those days, as I just didn't have the help and couldn't manage it alone.

I remember once I tried to get my hair cut with my son who must have been about 2. I was in the shampoo chair with my head full of suds when he broke away from my grip (he was in my lap) and dashed out of the store before anyone could stop him. The salon was in a mall, and I knew right where he was headed (the toy store he had seen next door), but it took me a bit before I was toweled off enough to chase after him.....I was lucky but it could have been a disaster.
He got a spanking that day--guess if I lived in Michigan & it happened to me now I'd just have to put him in "time out" (lol like he would stay if the trouble he was getting in was for running away in the first place!!)

This type of thing (appointments, errands) is exactly what Mother's Day Out was invented for. Many churches and even some day cares have this type program; it is cheaper than full time day care and possibly you would find it a better situation than trusting a sitter. The programs are usually either 2 or 3 days per week, and sometimes they even take occasional drop ins if they have space in your child's age group. It would be good for her socialization and your sanity as well as giving you some grown-up time for appointments and even to make lunch plans, etc.

Good luck!

I'm 20 weeks pregnant and have a daughter who will be 3 in January. She comes with me to all my appointments with my OB but you are right, I don't think she would be able to come to my dentist appointment. Try and get a family member to watch her the few hours you have to go to your appointment. Good luck!

I am a single mum, with no family or friends to help look after my kids. When they were younger, i used to take him with me to go to the dentist etc, but the receptionists at the dentists always used to ask if i wanted them to look after him while i had my appt. He loved it, he got lots of attention from all the lovely dental nurses/receptionists/patients in the waiting room etc...hee used to look forward to me going to the dentist!

Personally, i would take the child with you, but when it comes to personal appts, like a smear test etc, i would leave her in the stroller and ask the nurse to pull the curtain round you, so she can see your face, but nothing else.

Good luck, hope that helps!
