In my opinion mental health nurses are more important to the recovery of a patient afflicted with a mental disorder than the psychiatrist or psychologist. That is because they are more intimately associated with the patient whereas Doctors often distance themselves. The successful recovery of a person with mental problems is directly proportional to the TLC he/she receives.

In any case he/she has to be well trained and experienced in the etiology and treatment of the mental disorders in so far as they are known.

Good luck to you if you are planning to be a psychiatric nurse, good mental health, peace and Love!

In the out-patient clinic, some nurses are trained in mental-health counselling. The are designated as Certified Nurse Practioners and have a MS in nursing and may also have a MS in Mental-Health Counselling and be Certified Mental Health Practioner.

In the in-patient setting, registered nurses and LPN's are in charge of patient care and carrying out doctor's orders. Locked wards are often run by nurses with special training in mental health.
