they all are convincing enough. check the net! i loaded with information about it! cheers!
my own reflection says that nowdays there is lot of discretion when it comes to applying it. different rules apply to different people unfortunatly. prejuidices about their nationality and religion make them get away with their disrespect or be wrongly accused. but it's a good say nonetheless!

Rome Hotelbye today is certainly one of the main tourist locations of the planet, as a result of incalculable immensity of their archaeological and art treasures, in addition to for the charm of its special traditions, the wonder of their beautiful views, and the majesty of their wonderful parks. One of the points must see en Rome is Campo de'Fiori. Campo de'Fiori is a rectangular square south of Piazza Navona applied as a market place throughout the day, and celebration key for school pupils and tourists at night. The title indicates “field of flowers” and was first provided during the Middle Ages when the location was actually a meadow. Still another place worth visit is The Roman Forum. Located in the little area involving the Palatine and Capitoline Hills, The Roman Forum was for generations the teeming center of ancient Rome and today is really a sprawling destroy of architectural pieces

Despite its saintly source, I think "When in Rome, do as the Romans do!" has been a convenient excuse for doing things you would not do at home, where people know you, and you have a reputation to uphold.

If you ask me I believe this saying is derived from what ROME was back in those days...a very sticky place. Did you know that Roman's thought women were so inferior to men that having sex with a woman was in some way degrading to a man? So they had gay sex with each other. I am sure that went for most or a large part of the Roman population because "when in Rome.." probably means be gay and have sex with men too. You understand?

It came from St Ambrose: "si fueris Romae, Romano vivito more; si fueris alibi, vivito sicut ibi" which means "if you are in Rome, live in the Roman way; if you are elsewhere, live as they do there".
It is not about Rome, it is a piece of fine advice telling you to adapt yourself to the local customs of whereever. Rome was probably chosen as the apex of civilisation in its day for St Ambrose.

Actually, Romans in Rome doesn't do anything much but sex, foods and wines... so, if you go there, do what they do and don't do what Jesus have done.

It is meant to be if you are visiting a strange land, respect the customs of where you are. If you do not want to stand out as an obvious tourist, learn and respect the way people do things.
