Why do people kill in the name of Jesus? It's a broad question.

They did it because while Islam (always capitalize religions--who taught you how to write?) may be a religion of peace (like Judaism and Christianity), Sudan's government is controlled by a more radical and extreme interpretation of the religion. So when an infidel stomps all over their religion by naming a bear Mohammed (not Muhammed, which might have been acceptable), thereby encouraging Islam children to go against their faith's 'no idolatry' practice (Islam has a rule wherein no images or representations of Mohammed may be created), they're gonna raise a HUGE stink. One, because Muslim extremists see the West as the root of all evil. Two, because the government of Sudan let this person teach their children with the hope that said teacher would understand Islam and respect it.

So when she didn't understand why naming a teddy bear after Islam's savior was such a bad thing, it only served to underscore the West's ignorance of Islam and the Sudanese government's woeful lack of judgment--and no one likes being made a fool, especially whole governing bodies. Sometimes ideology, theology, and politics SHOULD be mutually exclusive.

Where is it written that Islam is a religion of peace? Have you read the Koran? Another question could be, did Gillian Gibbons know the impact of naming the toy before she did it?

I did not like what happened to that lady any less than anyone else
it was disgusting and that law should be done away with
but seriously ... 1000 protesters compared to a whole country ?
many of which apologised on behalf of their country , 2 of them made the peace talks to have the woman released, there is even talk of the woman being used as a pawn for the governments silly games with the UK .... and that their billboards were all pre printed showing that that the protesters were not your every day Muslim rioters

the woman has been released ... can we move on now ?

Note, the protesters did not represent the majority of Islamic believers, just like the Westboro Baptists do not represent all of Christianity. And just like the Westboro Baptists, the silence from their mainstream counterparts is deafening. If followers of moderate Islam wish to represent themselves as the religion of peace, they must denounce those who cry out for violence. The same goes for Christians.

According to your reasoning "Sudanese protestors" = "All practitioners of Islam."

Muslims are so ashamed of their crappy dysfunctional culture that anything -- ANYTHING -- can drive them into a homicidal rage.
