Stalin's Russia was supposed to be a socialist country, not a dictatorship. In theory, everything economic is communally owned, meaning social stratification caused by capitalism would be non-existant. It was meant to create the proverbial equal playing field. Religion was outlawed because it was viewed as being superstitious nonsense and promote bourgeoisie, so any visible conflict between any type of religion, whether it was Christian, Jewish, or Muslim, had to stop. Wherever you squelch religion, however, uprisings will always occur, if not between religions, then against the government that's promoting secularism. Spirituality is always going to be a sore spot, no matter what you do. True secularism of a country isn't possible. There are just too many people, with too many conflicting beliefs. What we need to learn to do is let the differences be.

And as for democracy, the answer is no. But neither can secularism. Pure secularism is impossible, just as having a country purely religious is impossible. Humans look for any and every difference they can to bicker about. That's just the way we are.

I don't think so. Brothers and sisters, parents and children, husbands and wives can't get along how can we expect countries to stay at peace? Most religions believe in non radical behavior and if the participants do what is expected of them the world would be more peaceful. Not everyone acts on his beliefs.
