So I do death metal vocals a la Arch Enemy/Devil Driver.

My family, particularly my mother hates it and think it's demonic.

How do I practice while still living under the same roof? I don't want to be admitted to a therapist or something because they think I'm possesed...

Are you in a band or something, if not what are you practicing for anyway? If you are in a band, then they should be lucky to hear you over the guitars. Your mom is right in a sense, the whole point and origin of death metal was to be heavier and more evil then traditional vocals like Metallica/Iron Maiden. Now, the lyrics don't have to be evil or gore or christian. Bands like Opeth, later years Death/Pestilence/Hypocrisy, Cynic, Atheist and more based their lyrics around other topics besides killing/satan/evil. Of course there are some Christian death metal like Living Sacrifice, Believer (awesome band, only 3 CD's though) and Mortification that were kinda good.
Good luck!

nicely, at first, it takes time to obtain the style for them. no longer many people start up in listening to DM vocals. For me, i in my opinion like deeper vocals. to that end, my tastes has gradually gotten further and extra severe interior the experience that the vocals i like are deeper and much less comprehensible. additionally, I want the vocals to be greater area of the song than a separate entity. by using this, I recommend that once i think of of a music, i do no longer decide directly to think of of the vocals/lyrics - i decide directly to think of of ways the music sounds. by using removing most of the comprehensible areas of the vocals, it facilitates to create a greater robust environment. Plus, lyrics are not as vast of a deal, on the grounds which you sometimes won't be able to hearken to them. So if somebody has only uncomplicated stupid lyrics, then it is skipped over because of the fact the music isn't relating to the lyrics anyhow. I recommend, look at Deicide - they lyrics themselves are exceedingly damn dumb, yet because of the way that the vocals are, you may only experience the hatred in Benton's voice. have you ever heard of Blotted technological awareness? they are an instrumental DM band it extremely is exceedingly snazzy.
