Bobby Jones was considered an amateur, so he could never take money...even though he's the only golfer to ever win the grand slam. He's probably who you're thinking of.

One who is presently a pro golfer won the Western Open as an amateur and could not accept money. He was Scott Verplank. Scott went through several years of misery and just within the past few years has risen to the top 35 once more.

any amatuer golfer. if you are considered as an amatuer golfer, you cannot accpet cash prizes. however, you are able to accept other awards up to the amount of $500.

I do recall that Gary Player donated his 1st place prize money to a children's hospital in the area where the tournament was held but I don't recall what tournament it was or the children's hospital.
