I just recently got an old 8mm mauser with the adjustable rear sights. However, i'm not sure how to adjust them for the best overall setting. It slides forward and back and there are numbers along each side. Is more forward for further distances, or backward for further distances to where the site is not elevated?

The number represents meters in hundreds starting in the rear at 1 for 100 meters, slide the slide up for 200, 300 ect..... all the way up to 20 for 2000 meters..... so keep the slide all the way at the rear at 1 for 100...... if you are shooting at deer at 100 meters.....

The other fellows are correct. However, you must understand, these sights are designed for one purpose:
To AQUIRE a man-sized target at the listed range. They're kinda rough, and are not the best quality sights and it is extremely hard to shoot good groups with them.
But have fun anyway!

Slide it forward for longer ranges, toward the end of the barrel.*
