Hi, how severe are you? Sorry to have to ask but Bipolar is a huge spectrum, I have Bipolar and OCD (trichotillamania) I pull my hair from the scalp. If you have a severe case that is not responding to treatment, you should check with your work and find out the criteria for a medical retirement. Also start checking into applying for social security. Not everyone can work while battling this illness.

Obtain help from friends in filling out the plethora of paperwork involved if you have trouble in this area.

First, I would check to see if your medications are working for you keeping your moods more stable. Also diet and taking care of yourself at home are also important. Is your lifestyle like a rollercoaster or are you on a fairly level schedule? Many people who are diagnosed with Bi-Polar Disorder lead normal productive lives working in a variety of jobs as long as they listen to their doctor and keep taking medication. One of the biggest problems with Depression and Bi-Polar Disorder is that once people start to feel better, they think they do not need medication anymore.

By seeing your counselor weekly, staying on medications that are helping you and doing your best to control your thoughts and impulses. If you do your best, that's all you can do.

Explaining to an employer what is happening, in a calm way, will help too so they understand what is going on with you.

Im not to sure but try to find a job that is ok for you but then one where you don't have to be nice and courteous to people. Military is a good choice!!

See if there is a job program for disabled people nearby.
