It's the burnt bits that are carcinogenic (cancer causing) by causing the creation of oxygen free radicals which attach themselves to one specific spot in the body, which then becomes cancerous. Some people appear to have natural immunity (for the want of a better phrase) and don't get cancer; even after 42 years of burnt food. However, there 'is' a correlation between eating burnt food (over a long period) and developing the big C.

No. There is no clinically proven evidence that any human being has gotten cancer just by eating burnt food (it doesn't seem to be too good for rats though). However, you may have heard that eating charred meats or food may place you at RISK for developing certain types of cancer. This is not the same thing as burnt food causing all forms of cancer . . it is just a risk for some types of oral or colon cancer. But, since milllions of people never develop cancer after eating this type of food . . it is not clear exactly who is at risk if not everyone develops cancer from eating this way.

No. Unless you burn plastic or something like that. Burnt food on its own has no known carcinogens. In fact, a little charcoal is good for the system. There are some foods that when burnt a lil taste better. What is toast????

Good one Harry. No, you can not get cancer from eating burnt food. You can get indigestion.Don't eat it if it's burnt. Only kind or desperate people do that.

I did read somewhere that the burnt bits contain cancer causing chemicals called carcinogens but don't know how much truth there is in that statement

There was a scare about that, must be 20 or more years ago, which suggested that burnt carbohydrate (as in toast) caused irritation of the stomach lining.
I think it was at that time it was suggested, too, that coffee (especially "Continental Roast" was another baddie because of the roasting of the coffee beans.
Don't know the outcome of either.

Possibly, yes you can. The body has to use a special enzyme to break down the burned spots and with foods that have been grilled with charcoal. There is a higher incidence of stomach cancer and colon cancer in people who eat a lot of grilled foods.

you talk to enough people, you'll think that EVERYTHING can cause cancer now. eating burnt food has never hurt me, just don't make yourself a diet of only burnt food.

not burnt food, HOT FOOD. If it's always. It burns your throat/mouth and forces it to heal over and over again and increases your risk for cancer.

If you heat oily or fatty foods beyond about 400deg C, pyrolised hydrocarbons are formed (similar to benzene ring compounds). These have mutagenic properties (for example they can possibly replace either of the base pairs in your DNA) This could interfere with normal cell aptosis rendering the cell carcenous ie replicating out of control and migrating to other tissues and forming tumours.
