Whether or not Iran or any country is a good candidate for military action is not (IMHO) based on whether or not the US military can go and obliterate an entire country. It is solidly based on what could we possibly hope to gain by doing so; while comparing that with non-military alternatives, as well as objectives.
Sadly, obliterating a country is relatively easy. Occupying any country is the hard and messy part. Essentially, occupying any country places an enormous load on the occupying country. This load was historically and universally eased by pillaging, tribute, and taxation. If there is nothing which the attackers need to take from a country, I would submit that it's not worth the effort of fighting a war of occupation.
Rather, obliterate the Army, Navy, Air Force's and command structure, then contain the population by destroying all major means of travel such Airports and train connections which leave the country.
The main weapon being the threat of their civilization allowed to descend into chaos. The incentive for countries to reign in their governments is to keep them in check or loose them. Don't attack any of the civilians, but don't allow any Military to be left en-mass, anywhere.
War is cruel and inhuman, inefficient war is worse...
The best options militarily are SF penetrations, UAV's, Bombing, and Complete RF Jamming and psychological warfare's. With buffer containment at the borders such as no pass zones. Allow Red Cross or Crescent to distibute aid and life sustaining commodities. If aid workers are attacked, no military intervention will be rendered and it will be left up to aid component to determine whether or not aid would be continued. Make no attempt to disarm the populace or to provide policing.
Oh and be perpared to pull out of Iraq and most of the middle east. Say good bye to 20% of all US supplies of oil and be prepared to engage Syria, Lebanon, Palistine, and Pakistan on behalf of Isreal too. In US gas prices soar above $5.00 as profiteering oil companies exploit the percieved shortage. American economy shudders as it looses 1 third of it's finincial momentum. Should that happen North Korea would launch strikes deep into South Korea and attack Japan, with Chinese help. China would attack Taiwan and collaspe it's government. A coup attempt in Russia maybe? Violence in Eurpoe as protests against Muslim countries explode? Turkey with-drawing from Nato? Sea's turning to blood and beginning to boil! Oh NOOOOOOoo!
