To add...not only can you use the MetroCard on NYC buses...they are also good on PATH trains (though you can't transfer from Subway or bus to PATH), MTA Long Island Bus as well as the Westchester County Bee-Line bus system...should your travels expand outside the city.

A standard MetroCard covers all MTA local buses, and that's the whole city (there used to be separate bus companies in certain boroughs, but around 2005 they merged into MTA). MetroCard will not cover *express* buses, those are $5/trip.

regular metrocard (the one you pay $2 for each ride) is excepted on:

local bus
subway
long island bus
roosevelt island tramway
staten island rail
PATH Train (a fare on the PATH will be charged)
westchester bee-line
express bus (fare $5)
airtrain jfk (fare $5)

unlimited ride metrocard (1 day, 7 days, 30 days, and 30 days express bus) is excepted on:

local bus
subway
long island bus
roosevelt island tramway
staten island rail
westchester bee-line
express bus

it is not excepted on the PATH Trains nor on airtrain jfk. also neither the regular metrocard nor the unlimited metrocard is excepted on metro-north or long island railroad.

i hope this information was very helpful
