We were all over my BF sisters house and I placed a napkin over my hand before I picked up some chips (since she didn't have any utensils to pick up stuff ) and they asked what I was doing and if I felt my hands weren't clean I should wash them! as if they were offended that I had done this....I felt like I was doing the proper thing. I just laughed it off but what was I supposed to do? I didn't want to put my hands on their stuff! LOL

You could have asked for a spoon/scoop/etc., you could have tipped the bowl and poured some out on your plate/napkin ... or you could have passed on the chips. Then, when folk come over to your place, you can show they how YOU like to serve up the chips. The napkin thing - although with the right thought behind it - had to look odd.

I have been entertaining in my home for 20 years and never had anyone pick up chips with a napkin, seems different. I know a lot of people that worry about germs and I always lay things out so that they feel safe, but next time just ask for utensils.

The thought was nice, but it's really a bit germaphobic. Unless you have a cold, there's really no trouble with picking up the chips with your hands. It's not like you were double-dipping or otherwise touching the chips in the bowl with your mouth! A few germs are even good for you, keeps your immune system active. Being *too* clean can cause more harm than it does good.

I think what you did was fine, they just have no couth! Personally, I shake out what I want onto a napkin or plate if it's in a bag, if not I use a napkin as you did. Don't let other people's lack of common sense make you question yours!

I would have laughed it off and said, "I was just trying to be polite!" But next time i think its okay to use your hands. I've never seen anyone do that with a napkin. Good for you for trying, though!

They have no sense of hygiene - if more people were like you, there wouldn't be so many viruses like MRSA about. You didn't do anything wrong - don't eat there again!

I don't know that they were offended - I think they were just surprised. I think what you did was thoughtful, but overkill.
