I am a college graduate. I have a full time job that I always show up to on time. Everyone loves me at work and always says what a great job I do. I have been promoted to the top of my position. I have a wonderful dog that I take great care of. I am very close with my friends and family and maintain a great relationship with all of them. BUT I drink every single night pretty much. Not because I feel I HAVE TO but more as a way to wind down from the day. What do you think?

Sounds like you are on your way to becoming a functioning alcoholic. None of your relationships suffer, or your job. And you can put it down when you want. Be careful, or it could get out of hand. I would start limiting it to one night a week , if you start to get sick or really thinking about it all the time you may want to go talk to a support group. Good luck.

For a male the safe drinking limit is up to 4 standard drinks a day and for a female 2 standard drinks a day with at least 2 alcohol free days a week.

If you drink more than the safe drinking limits you could develop into an alcoholic.

The question is more complicated then alot of people realize, but the answer is fairly simple. If you cant quit you might be on your way. I was a functionimg alcoholic for many years. At 1st I drank a couple of nights a week, then I drank everynight, and finally ended up in the hospitol. At 1st I drank socially then hthen i drank because of stress & finally drank just to stay numb.(This is all in a nut shell ofcourse & over a period of about 35 years) But my point is I ended up in rehab, found AA & am now a non-practicing alcohlic in recovery for about 1 1/2 years. To really answer your question Iv'e learned through experience that alcoholism is a progressive disease. And like any other non-curable disease it can kill.So my suggestion to you is simple quit, see what happens & maybe talk to somebody in AA.Because one alci can spot another a mile away. You need to contact AA, they have a national phone number and they will send you all kinds of stuff about alcoholism. There are about 35 different types of alcoholics. Based on what you said I'd say you fall into that number. Do something about it now don't wait until it's to late. Good luck. I had a long time friend and wife of 25 years who were both serve alcoholic, it wasn't a pretty sight. Alocholism effects more then just the alocoholic.Don't think for one minute that your friends and family don't know, they do.

Graduating from college, having a job, showing up on time, having a dog, and having friends ... what does that have to do with anything? If you're addicted to alcohol, you're addicted to alcohol regardless of any of that stuff.

Do you drink and get a buzz every night? If so, you know it's a problem. Don't pretend it isn't.

If you aren't drinking alot it's fine. You can have 2-3 beers every day after work. That's normal. That is the norm in the European pub culture. People in America just get all crazy.

You are an alcoholic if you can't live without the drink. You sound like you just like to unwind a bit. Unless it's interfering in you life, you don't have to worry.
