how much refers to more than one thing, a group of things, or cost and how many refers to a bunch of individual things.

" How much homework do you have?"
"Homework" is a general subject and can have more than one thing in it

" How many subjects do you have?"

Use "how many" when you are referring to a specific amount of something that you can count.

Use "how much" when you are referring to something that you can't count, like a volume of liquid.

"How many sandwiches are on the plate?"

"How much milk is in the glass?"

if you were to say how much, it could be used in a question like this; "How much does it cost?" or "How much space does it take up?"

whereas how many would be used like this; "How many lollies would you like?" and "How many times was that done?"

i think with "how much" you should use when can get fractions or partials (you need to measure). "how many" seems like you would only use it for whole things (you don't need to measure).
