I have a choice between a 2000 Hyundai elantra with 71k miles or a 1996 Volkswagen jetta with 84k. Which one do you think is better??

Sounds like you have a budget of only about $3000 and under, so I'd go with the Elantra as its newer, gets better gas mileage and more reliable then a Volkswagen. You should also check into a Mazda Protege, you can probably find a 2000 model for around that price. I agree with the poster above, a Honda/Toyota would be preferred, but as we both know they command a premium on the used market. I don't consider a Civic with 160,000 miles to be any better then an Elantra/Jetta with 80,000 miles, but people are willing to pay the same amount for them.

To be honest, neither are better. both are horrible. both have reliability issues.

I recommend looking for a Toyota or Honda. Much better.

TO BE HONEST WITH YOU NEITHER BECAUSE BOTH ARE TOO EXPENSIVE TO REPAIR.

THE VW WILL KILL YOU ON PARTS AND LABOR AND THE HYUNDAI WILL BE IN THE SHOP WITHIN THREE MONTHS.
