The sermon this Sunday made me realize the importance of memorizing scripture. It was about how the old nature is crucified and can no longer control us, but it can still speak to us and make suggestions to us (just as Jesus was able to speak while He was on the cross). When our old nature speaks to us, we have seconds to respond. If we know scripture, then we can respond correctly and quickly. Our pastor gave this example...he was at dinner with his family and was asked if he would like to sample the wine. He thought that it would be nice to relax with a glass of wine, but pastors are not to drink wine (I Timothy 3:2-4) so he recalled the scripture in his mind and declined. He went on to say, that if he were a deacon and not a pastor, that he would have been able to sample the wine (I Timothy 3:8) without it being sinful. We memorize scripture so that we can rightfully act when we are tempted by our old nature. Any thoughts?

Skepsis: We all know about the Pharisees, they memorized scripture to point out OTHERS wrongdoings, my example was strictly for the benefit of self.
I must admit, that I do not memorize scripture and verse, but I do sommit passages and meanings to memory. I usually come up with something that helps me, but couldn't tell you the exact wording or scripture reference. Maybe I should have said the importance of knowing your Bible instead of memorizing scripture.

Using scripture to fight off temptation is just one of the reasons. If you memorize and understand God's word it will also help you be more like him.

Ma'am, there is a difference between memorizing scripture and remebering what scripture says. Memorizing can also narrow one into one translation. Further, it was one of the Russian 'leaders' (a few dexadesago, I am not prejudice against Russians currently) memorized much as the 'Bible' but the nation by in large was still atheists.

That is a good reason to memorize scripture. However if you read and study your Bible the Holy Spirit is faithful to bring to your remembrance the scriptures that you need for a given situation. May the Lord Bless you in your search for truth

in the beginning of the Christianity did no longer exist earlier the arriving of Christ. the chosen human beings of God have been the jews to whom the Messiah replaced into despatched. They already knew the scriptures fairly the Pharisees and likewise the different sects. yet with all their awareness the wide-unfold public of them did no longer settle for Christ using fact the chosen one. even however He made all those miracles and the preaching for which greater desirable than while they exclaimed that they did in no way pay attention such preaching or observed such good issues. Jesus reported ' they have eyes yet ought to no longer see, they have ears yet ought to no longer pay attention.' From the time Christ replaced into risen and the Apostles began to coach the individuals, no longer in basic terms the Jews, that Christ replaced into the Lord. Christ got here additionally to no longer positioned away the previous testomony and the guidelines yet to lead them to greater perfect as He replaced into perfect. So this is a mix of the two scriptures. The previous being as a stable background and the hot the confirmation of what God needed from us. From there on the followers of Christ began to be noted as Christians. particularly this is from the Scriptures that all of us understand all yet then there must be the non-public relationship and following of Christ to be a real Christian.

That reminds me of something scriptural. Let me see... People who were more interested in appearing to be scrupulously correct according to the Bible, yet not obviously doing anything about lifting the burdens of the poor and outcast. What were they called? I seem to recall Jesus complaining a lot about them... They were, they were-- started with a P... Ooh, gotta get more familiar with the Bible!

Yes, that's one reason why it's important to memorize Scripture.
But it's MORE important to know what the Bible says. We can recite words repeatedly, but unless we understand what they mean, it's pointless.
People quote the Bible all the time, and have no idea what any of it means.

This is exactly why we need to memorize scripture. However I have found even when I do not specifically memorize scripture that it comes to me when it is needed.

Yes, we "arm" ourselves by "taking up the sword" which one way to do this is with knowledge from the Bible.
